This hoppy, farmhouse style ale has a champagne like effervescence with a crisp but light on the tongue finish. Similar to the Belgian Saison style , this beer serves well as an aperitif. Hennepin has a majestic golden hue. The style is called Grisette or farm house and is considered to be in the domain of the Belgian Saisons.

Beer No. 57 – Ommegang Hennepin

I keep a bit of everything in the house because you never know when a summer craving will come a little early.

STYLE: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

ABV: 7.7%

LOOK: Less than yellow, refreshing. Ideal one-finger head that doesn’t resist a subtle sip.

NOSE: It won’t shine here. And that’s OK because that rather misses the point. Loafy and dry.

MOUTH: White pepper, nonfat butter, bitter salad greens. It’s not – memorable. On the front, too much rind and not enough zest. On the back, a quiet lagerish coat.

Aroma of citrus, sweet fruits and some spices. Golden yellow color, hazy, with a frothy white head. Nice sweet malty flavors up front, mixed with citrus, and heavy spices, and finishes with a loud bitterness that follows the beer down your throat nicely. Stronger than your average saison but nicely done.

On tap - Pours hazy golden with a big creamy white head. Nose has a lot of hefe to it--lots of bubble gum, clove, and sweet yeast, but also has a dry, doughy, mineral quality to it. The taste is similar, with a well-integrated smoothness to it. It’s sweet up front but dries near the finish, making it extremely drinkable--dangerous for 7.7%. Creamy and smooth in the mouth. Excellent stuff--can’t believe it’s taken me this long to rate it.

This is a great, great american Saison. The yeast is nice and musky over sweet, light, wheaty flavors that really stand out in a country bereft of mindblowing saisons. The head gets a little absurd on this beer though; it can be very dense with very small bubbles and the damn thing does not dissolve for a while.

750 ml corked and caged bottle, different label, same UPC code, brewed and bottled by Duvel Moortgat NV, Puurs, Belgium. Initially clear dirty yellow, big white lasting foam settles slowly. Aroma is mouth watering, fruity, citrus, yeasty spicy. Fruity orange citrus yeasty spicy taste, mild malts, faint funk. Average carbonation, medium bodied, moderately hopped. ABV well hidden, yeasty, citrus tang increases, dry finish. LBW (Lagerboys Be Wary)

Effervescent thick foamy 3" white head with good lacing; even hazy pale gold amber liquid. Well-balanced taste with complex spicy and fruity yeast, malt sweetness and pleasant bitterness. Very smooth and dry clean finish. Very enjoyable and surprisingly easy to drink as I was expecting a more assertive (and perhaps cloying) beer for a rustic farmhouse ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
