stefanje (937), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Mar 30, 2008 Tasting, courtesy of Fordest’s. Poured a cloudy yellow-gold color with a small white head that quickly vanished. Nose was a big funky sour grapes aroma. The flavor also featured sour grapes but with white pepper rounding out the sides and sour cherries filling in the back end. The mouthfeel was smooth and silky. The finish was long with a lingering spicy sourness. Overall: A great strong sour saison--will drink again. cgarvieuk (4159), Edinburgh, Scotland Mar 30, 2008 Bottle at Toms Glasgow tasting 2 ... Blonde ... belgian hop nose ... fruity nice belgian hop ... Tasty but didnt seem that complex. ElGaucho56 (386), USA Mar 29, 2008 06/07 750 ml bottle. Pours a succulent honey-gold with a thin skein of a clear bubbly head. Tropical fruits on the nose, a sour floral quality, tangy herbal notes. Full on the palate, quite juicy, a malt profile similar to a tripel, chardonnay dryness towards the finish, with lemon zest. Brett is notable without being overwhelming. jefcon (997), Arlington, Virginia, USA Mar 28, 2008 Pours a translucent yellow straw with some good life to it. Aromas are sharp: brett, lemon, geranium and Pine Sol. Full and sour on the palate with a nice balance of hop and yeast. Clean, dry finish and medium mouthfeel make this a quaffable brew. Except for a juicy lemon candy sweetness in the center, the flavors are very good. I’ve been spoiled by the Russian River beers fermented with brettanomyces I have tried, and this one is not in that class. Still, I like the old-world nature of this saison and it is capably executed. fly (1331), austin, Tejas, USA Mar 26, 2008 Can’t say that I know enough about Bret to make any sort of valuable judgement call, but was glad to have two side by side at a tasting just by coincidence and then another follow up later at another tasting. In the aforementioned two, one was more sour and the other perhaps more dusty - rather subtle nuances difficult for me to describe despite ease in detection between them. Both were pleasant, but will say that in general, any added sournes is a plus. All in all, this is not amazing to me, but is very pleasant and will add that my lame brain has neglected total recall - think I received on from my very generous secret Santa and another in trade.
I need help lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Mar 25, 2008 Thanks to Fly for sharing this nice saison!
Pours hazed yellowish orange with a small filmy white head.
Smell is light and dusty, bretty, and some faintly sweet malt. Taste is mild and dusty with faintly tart malt, a bit of earthy hops and a mild bretty influence. Medium bodied and a bubbly mouthfeel. Pretty nice stuff! YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA Mar 20, 2008 A good example of a style not favored. Cloudy straw body with fleeting white head. Nose is fruity and spicy. Very biting in the mouth. Acidic. May be one that will improve with age. Nothing I’d seek out again. MrRain (415), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA Mar 17, 2008 Bottle poured into a Trappist glass. OO pours a delicate cloudy yellow like a witbier. The head is large and frothy. An aroma of lemon and hay is pretty strong and has a fruity acid tone. The body is thin and dry. It’s tart more like citrus peel or zest than the meat. It is highly carbonated and the alcohol mixes with the spicy hops to create a floral flavor that enhances as the beer warms to its intended temperature. The finish is quick but a slight tart after taste lingers.
