COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rare Vos is flemmish for "Sly Fox," and the name of one of Brussels’ great cafes. It has a sweetly fruity malt character and yeasty spiciness. A fine dose of yeast permits the beer to mature and mellow in the bottle.

Light, hazy, amber with a moderate off-white head that never fully goes away. Aroma of caramel, dark fruit, bubblegum, spice and banana. Taste is yeasty and malty sweet with fruity flavors and a slightly bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation and a light dryness.

Draught at the Blue Monk in Buffalo. Pours a copper colour with a thin layer of white head and some veils of lace. Smell is sweet and a quite yeasty. Taste is also sweet and yeasty. Almost a little watery.

750ml bottle, corked and caged. Pours burnt orange with a 2 finger off white head. Bread like aroma with light spice and fruit. Flavor starts outs sweet then turns tart and finishes dry. Fairly light in body with a good amount of carbonation.

On tap... Pours a medium copper orange with a nice off white head, great lace and retention... Very sweet malty nose, caramel, yeast and spices too, solid... Sweet taste as well, more fruit sweet than malt sweetness, yeast and spice still, too much belgian yeast for my liking, easily drinkable... Ok, wouldn’t have again

bottle into a lager glass. pours pale at first and then gets cloudy. Dark golden and hazy. Lots of white foam. Smells like strawberry or other sweet berry. Aroma is malt and fruit. Long and lasting finish that is satisfying. Overall, one of my favorite beers regardless of weather, time of day or occasion.

Drank this beer at Freeman’s in NYC, where I felt cool until I realized my brother-in-law got stuck paying 80 dollars for Macaroni and Cheese, and this beer cost me twelve bucks. Twelve ounces, mind you, not the 750. And, while Rare Vos has its charms, a dollar an ounce is a bit much. Still, I’ll try not to let this fiscal idiocy harm my objectivity. Rare Vos looks Belgian, authentically so, with a lovely color and unyielding head. Smells kind of like spiced bread. Good, but too much so; the taste becomes a letdown, bland, mildly sweet and spicy, but victim to a whole lot of yeast and a whole lot of carbonation. That pretty head apparently means the body has bite. Not my favorite brew, but it leaves me curious about the brewery. (7/19/08)

bottle@’t Waagstuk: pours clear amber/copper except for bottom of the bottle which was hazy, small off-white head that isn’t all that persistent, smell & taste, floral, strong presence of spices, herbal with a touch of burned caramel, very bread-like, this Belgian-style beer is distinctly different from the Belgian beer that I have tried so far, interesting but not worth to seek out if it is outside of your reach
