COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rare Vos is flemmish for "Sly Fox," and the name of one of Brussels’ great cafes. It has a sweetly fruity malt character and yeasty spiciness. A fine dose of yeast permits the beer to mature and mellow in the bottle.

UPDATED: MAR 25, 2013 750ml Bottle. The pour was a hazy dark amber with a large (2-3 finger) off-white creamy head that was mostly lasting and had good lacing. The aroma was of straw malts, citrus hops and an earthy Belgian yeast with notes of banana, caramel, coriander and dark fruit (raisons and prunes). The taste was lightly bitter with a hint of fruit and spices in the beginning with the finish being a tad bitter with a slight sweet malty flavor and a touch of caramel, maybe honey and very light citrus peel bitterness at the end. Flavor lasted an average time with a lightly sweet fruitiness pretty much left to lying on the taste buds after all else faded away. Mouthfeel was medium in body and creamy in texture with a nice soft carbonation. Overall I thought this beer was exquisitely tasty and quite well balanced, but everything this brewer puts out seems to be that way... www.facebook.com/KAJIIsBeerReviews

Had a bottle at a birthday party. Awesome - mild fruity flavor, coriander, mildly bitter finish.

This red brown beer has a thick creamy white head and a spicy aroma of cinnamon and cloves. It has a relatively mild flavor of fresh cinnamon banana bread. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

One of my favorites. Belgian beer with a light amber body and plenty of tight bubbles to go with.

I poured a 12oz bottle into an Ommegang tulip glass. It was bottled on 3/18/14 and cost $3.99 ($0.33 per ounce).

Appearance: Without the yeast it pours to a beautiful amber/copper hue with plenty of spastic carbonation visible. With the yeast it becomes murky and brown. Pours to a large, ivory, soapy head which retains and laces fairly well.

Smell: Distinct Ommegang house yeast esters plus light spice and floral notes.

Taste: Rare Vos might actually be the beer Ommegang is best known for, yet after six years of beer reviews I’ve never given it a formal review before. My opinion on this beer has changed over the yeast. A long time ago I wasn’t too crazy about this beer, but then a few years later I fell in love with it. Today, my opinion is somewhere in between, though I definitely appreciate and enjoy this beer quite a bit. It’s got everything it should have: a solid Belgian-inspired palette, interesting spices to give it distinctiveness, and versatility that makes it well suited to most situations.

Right off the bat, this beer tastes quite familiar. Amber malts create for some light sweetness, though the Belgian yeast is equally prominent so as to make this quite different than your average amber ale. Some dry bitterness at the apex with a hint of soap or perfume followed by a tingling sensation of orange peel and coriander on the finish. This is a taste often found in Christmas-y beers, but balanced enough to make it palatable year-round.

Drinkability: The mouthfeel is on the thinner side, but highly carbonated so as to be self-cleaning. It doesn’t feel like a big beer on the system, though. The 6.5% ABV on the label might lead you to believe Ommegang Rare Vos is a strong, hefty beer. However, once you start drinking it you realize it’s actually more of a glorified table beer as it can easily be paired with a wide variety of food, though it’s enjoyable enough to stand on its own. It’s tempting to session, but I probably wouldn’t.

The appearance has a cloudy orange with a medium off-white creamy head. The aroma blends Belgian yeast, slight banana esters, caramel malts, and clove; the taste is slightly sour and slightly sweet with a mild spiciness from the yeast. The palate fuses a slick texture, medium-full body, nearly flat carbonation, and a finish that is fairly abrupt.

Rare Vos was the 2nd offering from Ommegang that I tried. I found that it was slightly fruity and the spiciness came on later. The nice color and malty aspects made it rather enjoyable.

UPDATED: JUN 11, 2014 Pours a dark honey color with a thin white head. Aroma of bubble gum and fruit. Thin mouth feel with a hint of fruit on the tongue. Backend disappears with zero bitterness. Not a bad Belgian ale.

Great rusty gold-orange color, full of life. Smell is a little faint, but I get mild caramel, apricot, brown sugar. Taste is a nice balance between sweetness and malt, a bit of a pleasant lingering aftertaste.
