Scythe & Sickle Harvest Ale is brewed with barley, wheat, oats and rye. Scythe and sickle is a seasonal brew that celebrates the richness of the grain harvest. Brewed with barley, wheat, oats and – in a nod to traditional upstate New York grains – rye, this fine ale is malty and creamy on the palate. The flavors of the grains and earth shine through. Enjoy the refreshment of the season and joys of fine brewing.

Pours a dark hazy orange with a large beige head, some lacing. Aroma and taste of sweet caramel malt, some earthy spicy rye and fruity notes, yeast and lightly toasted barley. Palate is a medium body with sweet spices and good carbonation. Finishes with sweet malt, spicy fruity notes, rye, yeasty and bready notes with some spicy hops bitterness on the end for balance. Overall a very good and flavorful seasonal brew.

A - Pours a hazy amber-orange with a finger of frothy slightly off-white head. The head fades down fairly slowly leaving behind some nice lacing. S - Aroma is a mix of caramel malts, grapefruit, pine, and floral hops, oats, spicy rye, and some bready malts. T - Starts off with a mix of sweet caramel malts with some grapefruit hops, spicy rye, and some oats. Through the middle, some pine and lightly spicy hops come through with some bitterness alongside some bready malts. The finish is a mix of pine and floral hops, some bitterness, some bready malts, spicy rye, and oats. M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry, lightly bitter, and spicy. D - Very drinkable. Good overall balance and complexity. Like the rye.

Bottle at 3 Floyds. Hazy orange color with a thick white meringue head. Vinuous rye aroma. Taste is spicy rye, fruity yeast, peat, and cereal malt. Numbing mouthfeel followed by a bubblegum and bitter hop finish. Very interesting and flavorful. Really growing on me and becoming increasingly awesome.

GABF 2012, Friday. Sweet malt and hops with Belgian yeast, which gives an earthy character. Good palate, like most of their beers. Good palate. l thought this was higher in alcohol while drinking it.

Bottle was a bit of a gusher. a cloudy of amber orange pour w/ a tall dense white head and soapy lacing dissipates quickly even w/ visible carbonation remaining. First smell was almost a little funky earthy note then lots of grainy aromas leading to a little sweetness and something I would say resembles rye and a slight touch of citrus. Palate is aggressively carbonated but other than that maintains a pretty average body. Flavor was again very grainy and lightly sweet. Contains some hints of a sweet bready yeast characteristic that is familiar to many of ommegang’s beers and a big dry barley flavor. A bit plain jain in flavor, overly grainy lots of hints of barley, wheat, just a bit boring and not the umph I was expecting from a "harvest ale".

On tap
I had been meaning to pick up a bottle of this but seeing it on tap I decided to give it a shot. The payoff was a solid harvest seasonal. I also have a bottle to try in comparison. If it is nearly as good it was worth the $2.99 price tag.

Aroma / Appearance - A cloudy maple base bubbles idly. Wheat, nutty bread dough, and smooth malts are the best aspects of a fine cool feeling beer. The atmosphere it sets reminds me of raking leaves in a chilled autumn afternoon.

Flavor / Palate - Chewy with a warmth that radiates from the back of the throat, this beer makes quite the impression. It warms like the heat from a glowing fire - cool at first but as you get closer takes on a comfortable and lazy feel. The finish includes rye and peanut butter. Ultimately this was worth the price for a full pint.

Bready and cereal aroma. Slightly hazy gold color with a large foamy head and long head retention. Tastes of cereal grains and a slight citrus zing. Some citrus hop flavor. Medium low hop bitterness and relatively dry. Medium-full body with a creamy palate sensation. Delicious little beer.

Nice fluffy head on the pour from a bottle. Just a touch brown with the beer itself being a nice golden. Grains, malts, yeast and bread and in the aroma which translate to a nice flavor with the added rye punch that lingers after. Not my favorite Ommegang, but a nice brew.

Draft at Pins...Hazy color... decent little head. Toasty malt nose. Taste is very well balanced beer, intially a nice toasty grainy malt presence with just a nice hop presence but not really bitter. Creamy smooth almost cask like.... Overall: Just a nice balanced sessionable brew.
