COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scythe & Sickle Harvest Ale is brewed with barley, wheat, oats and rye. Scythe and sickle is a seasonal brew that celebrates the richness of the grain harvest. Brewed with barley, wheat, oats and – in a nod to traditional upstate New York grains – rye, this fine ale is malty and creamy on the palate. The flavors of the grains and earth shine through. Enjoy the refreshment of the season and joys of fine brewing.

Beer pours a partly cloudy light caramel color with a tall off-white persistent head. Chunky lacing. Besides the aroma of the Belgian yeast, the predominant aromas are apricot, clove, white pepper and a touch of baseball glove leather. The taste is mildly sweet, but more fruity sweetness than sugar sweetness. Mildly tart and softly bitter. Medium-bodied. The grains show up in the finish, although I would say the taste is more of raw grain than cooked or roasted. Clean finish. The texture is soft. Body is medium. Medium carbonation. A pleasant beer that really tastes at around 55 degrees F. A very approachable brew from one of my favorite American breweries.

12 oz pour from bottle into Duvel tulip. Pours very hazy, vibrant orange, great fluffy white head that daily quickly dissipates. Nose is sweet, malty, hay, caramel, and a hint of rye. Body is full rich and creamy with a dry finish. Taste is sweet and malty. A beer for a cold fall night.

Pours a hazy golden yellow color. Aromas of grainy malts, yeast, and a touch of hops. Flavor was kind of bland, herbal with some sweetness.

My #1 beer of all time! Taste the rye. Great carbonation! Light enough to drink all day but enough body to remind you that it's there. Perfect!

2014 vintage on tap at HopCat Ann Arbor. Pours a clear brown amber with a white head. Aromas of light bubble gum and slight toastiness. As for the flavor, the age (maybe) seems to give it a light crispness. Toasted malt and fruitiness with that light crispness, overall bubble gum with some earthy aged hops. Not sure quite why, but I find it really enjoyable with the age on it.

12oz bottle (refrigerated) as Grains of Truth, best before 7/20/16, drunk 12/15/15.
Light haziness to the copper-to-light-amber liquid with plentiful carbonation creating a creamy, off-white head that is well-retained.
Balanced blend of Belgian yeast and malts in the nose, displaying fruits (apple, cherry, strawberry), vanilla, light caramel and baked bread. Just a touch of clove and black pepper, as well. No alcohol or flaws.
Very malty, unsurprisingly with notes of sugar cookies, light caramel, vanilla, various grains and lots of breadiness. Definitely vanilla wafers. But it’s all carried-on by a tight carbonation and very softly-malted texture that prevents any hypothetical graininess/astringency from the malt/grains. Sweetness is moderate; perhaps a bit above average for a Belgian ale, but the flavors are enjoyable and the maltiness is obviously part of what the beer’s aiming for. Pepper, clove, light citrus and vanilla linger on the finish.

Hazy golden with a big white head. Aroma is a little peppery with some light notes of bread malt. Flavor is clean and peppery up front with a wheat finish. Fairly effervescent with a light snap to it.

Signature Ommegang, always doing their due process in regards to Belgian styles. Nice carbonation, esters, rye spice notes.

Grains of Truth (Scythe and Sickle) is a golden brown beer that tastes spicier than it looks. It’s a little hoppy compared to a lot of other Ommegang beers, and it sits on the tongue after you swallow in a way that reminds you of ginger or something similar. It’s a decent beer that’s great for fall, but it’s pretty average compared to the rest of their lineup.
