This one poured a medium brown color with a beige head. Aroma of slightly burned chocolate, dark fruits, and spicey yeast. Flavor was similar, reminded me a lot of a lighter version of 3 philosophers.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 BMMillsy (717) - Florida, USA - APR 17, 2013
On draft at The Top Gainesville into a small snifter. Pours black with a tiny head. Aroma of sweet candy malt, belgian yeast, maybe a little roast and cherry. Mouthfeel close to a stout with low carbonation. Creamy up front that goes into a cherry flavor that takes over the palate and lasts a bit. Sort of a cherry cordial but not overly sweet. Touch of bitterness keeps things in check. Nicely balanced.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Brigadier (2275) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - APR 14, 2013
750 ml bottle
A decent Belgian, this is pretty pedestrian by the standards of previous experiences with Ommegang. If they were still less than $9.99 I would not be bothered. However now that some of the special releases are pushing $14.99+ it is hard to justify them with so many other options. Even so I am willing to continue to try them on draft.
Aroma / Appearance - The fluid black base contains a rich texture of iced coffee, chocolate pie filling, and traces of ash. The head looks like someone sprinkled chocolate shavings on top. It might be light in texture but the nose and appearance get the job done.
Flavor / Palate - Chocolate chips, coffee, and other sweet aspects refresh a thirsty palate. It is not terribly complex. However it has enough to make it worth finishing the entire bottle. This might have grabbed me based on reputation. That will not happen in the future as I’ll be double checking reviews before grabbing one offs again.
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 BOLTZ7555 (2424) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - MAR 31, 2013
Dark mahogany pour with an onyx core and latte tower of bubbles. Significant lacing. Soft and subtle aroma of Belgian yeast, mild pepper, faint cocoa, and perhaps a hint of char. Some ash, light but tart cherry skin, and bitter chocolate are there. Just not terribly impressed...not interesting or bold!

Draft at Dexters. Deep brown-black-red body. Lacy, patchy head. Deep malty, fruity undertones. chalky chocolate malt. Smooth sugary malt tones. Almost mild cherry tones under the smooth malt. Quite enjoyable, but the Dexters taps probably make it less enjoyable than the bottle. Kind of like a Dubbel without the Belgian yeast forwardness. Choco-cherry all the way. Really smooth and well done. Big, but not at all overbearing.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/10/2011. Pours pitch black color with a 2-3 finger dense and fluffy tan head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of raisin, cherry, prune, milk chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, clove, pepper, earth, and yeast spiciness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted notes and yeast esters. Taste of cherry, raisin, milk chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, toast, dark bread, clove, earth, light pepper, and yeast spiciness. Slight fruit and cocoa tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark fruit, milk chocolate, cocoa, toast, roasted malt, dark bread, earth, and light yeast spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance and complexity of roasted chocolate flavors and yeast esters; with zero cloying flavors present on the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very creamy and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Belgian style porter! Very nice balance and complexity of roasted chocolate flavors and yeast esters; and extremely smooth to drink. Really enjoyed this one.
