COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Bottle split with mcberko. Pours hazy amber brown with a white disapating head. Aroma of candied pear, black treacle, boozy notes, yeast. Flavour of the same, except candied pear, more slightly sour apple. Medium bodied, well balanced. Nice.

Tasted from 12oz bottle into tulip glass. It poured a nice, slightly hazy reddish copper color with weak beige foam and some Belgian lace. Good bottle conditioning characteristics. Aromas and flavors of a true-to-style Belgian quad (or "Belgian Dark Strong Ale" if you subscribe to BJCP naming) plus a hint of sour cherry lambic. Complex. Rich malt and candy-sugar sweetness, fruity and mildly toasty melanoidins, peppery Belgian yeast phenols, and the hops plus boozy alcohol melded into a flowery perfume. Medium body, high carbonation, fairly dry finish. The subtle pie-cherry sourness did add a nice new layer to a style I already enjoy.

Bottle. Brief tan head. Pours a cloudy, sediment filled reddish brown. Nose was fruity and malty, with cherry and plum. Flavor was a mixure of sweet and tart cherry, some plum, and a touch of malt bitterness. Heavy to the palate, but balanced. Was very smooth despite the meaty appearance.

Pours a murky reddish brown with a small creamy beige head. The aroma is sweet, tart, and fruity with notes of cherry and caramel. The taste is sweet, malty, yeasty, and fruity, with some light tartness. I've never had a quad quite like this. A very unique brew. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I had high hopes for this one though good it’s not what I had hoped for. Poured into a trappist glass, nice head with good retention a nice dark amber, the aroma would be fruit, sweet, the taste is tangy citrus, alcohol is very noticeable and the carbonation too sharp, not the velvety carbonation I would expect from it, a lot of warmth going down.

2010 version, aged almost 2 years...bottled 6/3/10. Pours translucent purple with off white bead. Dark fruit in the nose. Palate is dark fruit, mostly cherry, yeast and surprisingly boozy. Finish is dry and bitter. Honeslty, somewhat disappointed by this one. It was good, but not great at all, and the booze stuck out more than the top beers in it’s style.

Beautiful beer. Pours brown/amber with a frothy light tan head, and big lacing. Lots of aromas and flavours going on in this one, toffee, mild tart cherries, yeast, cereals. Lots of fine carbonation, and good creamy mouthfeel. Finish was very acidic, and alcohol was dangerously well hidden. Love this one!

Pours a hazy amber brown with a light brown head and yeasty aroma of fruits. Taste is complex, of malt, fruits, cherries, and caramel with a lingering alcohol finish. Nice quadrupel, pleasant brew.

Pours a ruby red with a small head. Aroma is fruity, sweet and yeasty. Taste full of flavor, sweet, and fruity with some mild tart cherry. Finish is dry with mild lingering. Quite enjoyable and refrshing, and drinks very easy despite the moderate ABV. Quaff Score 9 /10
