Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

750 ml. bottle (2008) in an Ommegang goblet. The Lindemans kriek blended nicely with what must have been a middling Quadrupel. Ar: Splendid nose, dominated by cherries, candied sugar and secondary overripe fruits. Abv well masked in the nose. Ap: Beautiful, beautiful color- reddish brown that reveals a deep honey color in the light. It could have perhaps poured a better head w/ more retention on the sides of the glass upon swilling. Nevertheless...Fl: Candied sugar, molasses, some dark fruits, malt and a surprising hops presence that lent it a unique balance. High abv comes through in the end with some metallic booziness. Pa: Lively carbonation makes it a sprightly brew in the mouth, rolls around nicely and is dry. A solid sipper on the whole- I have soft spot for Ommegang brews.

Pours a quick diminishing tan head...dark mahogany color with ruby highlights. Sweet malt and cherry aroma. Remarkable taste. Heavy malt, raisins, cherries, a little bitterness on the back end. Great mix of sweet and sour. Alcohol is well hideen for the high ABV, although the warming sensation hits you. One of my favorites.

2008 edition. Rich brown pour with a ring of off white foam. Yeasty aroma with spice, cherry, ripe bananna, and some funk.Very complex mouth: sweet, sour, bitter, coating and vibrant. Taste is woody and ripe fruit, cherry is in the back, but there. Overall an intoxicating beer for the more mature palates.

I always love what Ommegang puts out. It pours a deep dark amber color with a touch of red that wants to come out. Plenty of cherry notes in the aroma, but not too much in flavor. A perfect clean finish you would expect from this brewery.

Love this beer. Mahogany with a nice tan head and good lacing. The balance of sweet and tart with the cherry is perfect and the strong ale base is wonderful.
