Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Bottle... Poured deep ruby with a thin off-white head. Toasted burnt/caramelized sugars, spices and warming alcohol on the nose. Big, chewy palate which accentuate the strong alcohol notes. Roasted malts and dark fruits--like prunes or raisins. Swee, fruits in the finish with reminiscing alcohol and a nutty almond character.

I’ve always liked this beer. The aroma and flavor are unique and delicous which are two things that dont always go hand in hand. When I feel like something special, I reach for this one.

Pours dark brown/red, medium head. Aroma is sweet with some cherry fruitiness. Taste is interesting, not overly fruity, some sour notes, like unripe cherries. Bitter finish. Interesting mix.

12 oz bottle into a brandy glass. Cherry, light malty, and overripe fruit aroma. Dark red color with ring of off-white head. Medium bitter, medium sweet, and medium sour, all blend well hiding the alcohol. Medium bodied, thin textured, fizzy on the tongue. Kriek initially on the palate, into sweet raisins, and malt finishing sweet abruptly then into long bitter-sour. Overall, a worthy Quad.

750 ml. bottle (2008) in an Ommegang goblet. The Lindemans kriek blended nicely with what must have been a middling Quadrupel. Ar: Splendid nose, dominated by cherries, candied sugar and secondary overripe fruits. Abv well masked in the nose. Ap: Beautiful, beautiful color- reddish brown that reveals a deep honey color in the light. It could have perhaps poured a better head w/ more retention on the sides of the glass upon swilling. Nevertheless...Fl: Candied sugar, molasses, some dark fruits, malt and a surprising hops presence that lent it a unique balance. High abv comes through in the end with some metallic booziness. Pa: Lively carbonation makes it a sprightly brew in the mouth, rolls around nicely and is dry. A solid sipper on the whole- I have soft spot for Ommegang brews.
