Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Pours a cloudy dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma is abundant in cherry, and Belgian yeast. Taste is heavy on cherry and dark fruit, sweet, but the finish is somewhat dry, moderate carbonation. Slight alcohol presence detected but not harsh at all. Great desert beer.

Hazy copper-brown with a nice, almost-white head. Yeast, bready malt, booze, candi sugar in the nose. Nice, but not particularly distinctive. Yeast, dried fruit, booze, and a nice earthiness in the flavour. A touch of herbs and brown spice. Not too sweet.

Transfer from BA review on 10-28-12- Poured from bottle into tulip glass Appearance – The brew is poured a hazy ruby red –brown color brew with a nice two finger white head. The head fades over about a two minute time span to leave a moderate amount of lacing. Smell - The aroma is of a yeasty and cherry nature. Mixed with these smells are nice aromas of a bready, sweet caramel, and a nice spicy nature. A rather tasty smelling brew. Taste – The taste begins rather large of a more bready and cherry flavor. As the taste advances the fruit flavor of cherry grows even stronger with some notes of a more yeasty as well as a lighter more “wild” sour and tart flavor coming to the tongue. Other sweet flavors of a more toffee nature then come to the tongue more toward the end of the taste. These when combined with some alcohol and a light toasted flavor leave a balanced, fruity Belgian flavor linger on the tongue as the taste commences. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the just above average side in terms of creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average side. The creamy body is nice for the more yeasty and some of the fruit flavors. But yet with its carbonation the beer is still more on the refreshing and drinkable side (even at ~10% abv.) Overall – A quite tasty beer. A nice quad with all its fruit, yeasty and boozy flavor, but mixed with a nice but balanced cherry flavor. Very enjoyable and drinkable.

Bottle. Clear reddish brown wit ha beige head that lasts on the sides. Aromas of caramel, banana, toffee, cherry, and spice. Flavor is the same. Medium to full bodied, smooth with a bit of warmth on the end. Biter-sweet finish.

Bottle in a hotel room in Las Vegas. Clear dark amber pour, thick creamy light brown head. Aroma of caramel, ripe fruits, quite malty, some licorice and slightly warming alcoholic. Flavor is sweet and fruity up front, but quite bitter in the finish. Boozy aftertaste. Thick body and heavily carbonated.

Fresh out of the bottle, bubblegum like crazy, a banana after-effect and yeast WAY up in my face on the first sip. Hazy and very dark amber with a lot of light sediment floating throughout the glass. Head was nice for about ten minutes then disappeared with no lacing at all. I am experiencing lots of sour, lots of yeast and yes, bananas and bubblegum. And cherries. Very sweet and cloying cherries. Lightly fizzy and long in the sour department, and not my favorite quad.

I poured this beer into my Ommegang chalice vigorously and it produced a rather large dense foamy off white head that faded to a wispy veil inside a nice foam ring over a nice dark chestnut colored beer with ruby highlights. Smells thick and rich with candied sugar, malts and fruit. I don,t smell cherries but i do smell the tartness. Strong malt backbone with sweet candied sugar, fruits. Hints of cherry tartness run through it. Medium body feel with alcohol warming and a dry tart finish. Personally, not my style. It is a very strong tasting beer that works well as an apertif for after dinner. I could see this being a decent dessert beer. Something chocolate would compliment nicely I think.

Pours a mahogany red brown with one finger of off-white head diminishing gradually to a thin skim and moderate lacing. Nose is raisins, dark stone fruit, cherries, slight citrus and faint spicy yeast. Taste is similar, with a clear cherry kriek tang cutting through. Mouthfeel is bold yet crisp, with energetic sustained carbonation and surprisingly little alcohol warming. Fantastic. Nowhere near as heavy as the appearance or nose would suggest, buoyed aloft by the sustained carbonation and the subtle yet distinct kriek edge. That, plus a seriously sneaky ABV, make this a bit of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Highly recommended.
