Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Bottle. Clear reddish brown wit ha beige head that lasts on the sides. Aromas of caramel, banana, toffee, cherry, and spice. Flavor is the same. Medium to full bodied, smooth with a bit of warmth on the end. Biter-sweet finish.

Bottle in a hotel room in Las Vegas. Clear dark amber pour, thick creamy light brown head. Aroma of caramel, ripe fruits, quite malty, some licorice and slightly warming alcoholic. Flavor is sweet and fruity up front, but quite bitter in the finish. Boozy aftertaste. Thick body and heavily carbonated.

Fresh out of the bottle, bubblegum like crazy, a banana after-effect and yeast WAY up in my face on the first sip. Hazy and very dark amber with a lot of light sediment floating throughout the glass. Head was nice for about ten minutes then disappeared with no lacing at all. I am experiencing lots of sour, lots of yeast and yes, bananas and bubblegum. And cherries. Very sweet and cloying cherries. Lightly fizzy and long in the sour department, and not my favorite quad.

I poured this beer into my Ommegang chalice vigorously and it produced a rather large dense foamy off white head that faded to a wispy veil inside a nice foam ring over a nice dark chestnut colored beer with ruby highlights. Smells thick and rich with candied sugar, malts and fruit. I don,t smell cherries but i do smell the tartness. Strong malt backbone with sweet candied sugar, fruits. Hints of cherry tartness run through it. Medium body feel with alcohol warming and a dry tart finish. Personally, not my style. It is a very strong tasting beer that works well as an apertif for after dinner. I could see this being a decent dessert beer. Something chocolate would compliment nicely I think.

Pours a mahogany red brown with one finger of off-white head diminishing gradually to a thin skim and moderate lacing. Nose is raisins, dark stone fruit, cherries, slight citrus and faint spicy yeast. Taste is similar, with a clear cherry kriek tang cutting through. Mouthfeel is bold yet crisp, with energetic sustained carbonation and surprisingly little alcohol warming. Fantastic. Nowhere near as heavy as the appearance or nose would suggest, buoyed aloft by the sustained carbonation and the subtle yet distinct kriek edge. That, plus a seriously sneaky ABV, make this a bit of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Highly recommended.

Pours a dark mahogany with an off white head. Aroma is raisins and alcohol. This is a heavy beer. Taste is dark fruits and alcohol. Not a fan of quads but this isn’t bad.

Poured from awesome 750 mL corked bottle into goblet. Dark amber- brown with cream colored sticky head. Rich malty scent with a little fruit mixed in. Yeasty/ malty taste with a slightly bitter/ slightly boozy finish. Nice, smooth mouthfeel. Solid offering from Ommegang.

Poured in to tulip glass. Aroma is deep and earthy with a roasty caramel scent. Slight notes of resin and clove. Tall off white 2 finger head that subsides down to a 1 finger and stays with little lacing. Beautiful dark amber brown color almost opaque. Taste is a nice sweet tang on the front with a malty and slightly floral flavor. The back end presents a very slight bitterness that drops in to a nutty caramel. Good fizzy feeling throughout which leaves the mouth feeling moist and slightly sticky after eating something sugary. Overall this is a fantastic brew thats easy to sip on throughout the night but watch out for that 9.7 ABV because it will creep.

Bottle: murky brown with a small light brown head. Sweet malts with prunes and almonds. Rich yeasty flavors with a cherry finish which is slightly slimy.
