MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Dec 16, 2008 Bottle shared with me by my friend Chris- A rusty auburn pour created a frothy beige cap with pretty lace. Nose of over ripe dark fruits, lots of caramel and Belgian candy sugar, floral notes, some perfume, molasses, and a hint of red cherry. Tastes of sweet candy, dark pit fruits, molasses, with added cherries and a good dose of balancing bittering hops. Finishes sweet, fruity, quite creamy and no trace of the high ABV. Nice brew. Thanks Chris. topherh (878), Kearney, Missouri, USA Dec 15, 2008 Bottle pours a deep brown with ruby edges. Aromas of cherries and sweet malt. Flavor is sour cherry, ripe fruit, very lively in the mouth. nuplastikk (1161), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Dec 12, 2008 750ml bottle from 2007, drank in December of 2008. Very attractive, thick, reddish brown color. The aroma has turned a little off at this point. Ive only had it a handful of times in the past, but I believe it as a more noticeable cherry taste when fresh. Tastes like a less carbonated and alcoholic La Trappe Quad to me, which is a good thing, to capture some of the Quadrupel subtleties. This rating only reflects the aged version, Id assume the fresh one would score much higher. MishkinBeer (64), , New York, USA Dec 12, 2008 The beer has a cloudy, deep red appearance in the glass. The head is off-white with a dab of mauve and foamy. Full bodied with a defined cherry flavor, Three Philosophers buzzes in your mouth initially and then dissipates into a sweet round finish. The sweetness does not overwhelm however. This ale is truly a delight. popery (133), San Francisco, California, USA Dec 12, 2008 A very good blended quad and cherry lambic that flirts with greatness. Brightly brown liquid if you let the yeast settle. Bubbly head. Somewhat strong carbonation. Strong sour cherry smell and taste. Also bananas cloves pepper dark wood and funky earth flavors. The cherry dominates more than I would prefer. It is clear that an immense amount of effort goes into this beer. Ommegang is an excellent brewery with a delicious yeast strain in their Belgians that is only a notch or so below the Trappists. Now the size of that notch varies in my mind from beer to beer. At any rate a very interesting beer that would be great for introducing to non craft beer drinkers but there is a tad too much cherry flavor for a higher rating. Great idea but I am not a big enough fan of fruity lambics to love it. scoth (267), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Dec 6, 2008 Bottle. Pours cloudy scarlet-brown, with a medium-thick biege head. Strong malty aroma, leather, brandy and cherries. Thick body. Wood and leather flavor, fermented cherries, and a little nutty. Slightly dry and bitter aftertaste that helps balance all of the malt. psuCE03 (122), York, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 5, 2008 Deep deep red with nice carbonation. Smells like alcohol and cherries. Lots of malt i the flavor with some alcohol and a noticeable bitterness at the end. Great beer that deserves to be sipped. chandler0201 (341), Durham, North Carolina, USA Dec 3, 2008 Orange brown with some head in the pour. Malts and cherry aroma, with some caramel in the hint. Taste was a bit carbonated and bubbly alcohol, with only a hint of cherry. Great beer but it would have been even better if the taste matched the great smell.
