Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

75cl bottle from Willow Bend Liquors (Tampa). Pours a dark, brown-red with one finger white-tan head that recedes slowly and provides lacing on the glass. Smells sweet and malty with notes of coffee and caramel. Flavor is malt, chocolate, caramel, with a slight bitter finish. Cherry lambic comes through more strongly as the beer warms from serving temperature.

Thick, illustrious head, deep brown pour. Reminds me of the St. Bernardus Abt 12, but with a little more obvious cherry hint to it. Very complex...a lot happening. As one previous reviewer said, it hides the alcohol quite well. Very refreshing for a quad. Very nice mouthfeel. Purchased in New York City, enjoyed in Alabama.

Pours a deep dark brown with small but lasting off-white head. I poured slowly so head could have been thicker. Aroma is nothing special but pleasant. Taste is complex and has a nice balance of minor cherry and maybe chocolate and plum. Many tastes going on here. It hides the alcohol fairly well. I’m more into lighter bodied styles but this is a nice quad.

First rating ever here. Picked up a grab bag of single bottles at Total Wine on Namans Rd in DE. Awesome one to start with. Rich flavor, beautiful to look at, hint of cherry. I’ll be buying another very soon.

Tried a sample at local homebrew club and again to make sure. 10% was noticeable but only just, cherrries was noticeable but not overly so, smooth rounded taste which was quite complex, malts were a treat, cherries to me were just an added extra.

Talk about a beer that packs a big buzz! 10% this beer set me off to a great night. Pours a cloudy reddish body with aromas of Caramel and oak. Cherries are evident, finishes with cherry flavor. Has a creamy mouthfeel that continues to carbonate in your mouth. and midpalate tastes like bread or biscuits or something similar.

Fantastic smelling beer, aromas of cherries, malt and sugar. Pours a dark auburn with carbonation you’d expect from a beer mixed with lambic. Well rounded taste with a great tartness of cherry at the end (and I’m not a huge fan of cherry). Very pleasantly surprised with this, recommended.

Pours a deep ruby brown with a good head that sticks around. Aroma is wonderful - sweet fruits (cherries, grapes) balanced by yeast, light malts and brown sugar. Flavor is great, too - though the sour / bitter notes hit more strongly than in the aroma. The cherries are definitely tart, and the malts taste roastier than they smell. Mouthfeel is great, but it leaves a medicinal aftertaste - like a cherry cough drop - that really started to get irritating about halfway through the glass. Other than that, this is great stuff.
