Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Bottle - Pours a dark brown with light tan head. Sweet malty aroma with hints of cherry and chocolate. A very tasty beer with perfect carbonation and sweet malt flavor. The chocolate and mild cherry flavor really do well together. This is an outstanding beer and a good value.

Pours hazy dark amber with light tan head. Aroma of yeast with a hint of sour cherries. Initial flavor is malty and finish is sour cherries and a slight metallic taste. Medium body with lively carbonation. OK, but not one I will be seeking to have again.

The pour is a deep reddish brown, with a reasonable tannish head. The nose is true to all Belgian quads with notes of dark fruit, yeast, some malt, some nutty aromas, but all somewhat washed over by a sour cherry scent. The flavor is much like a combination of a decent quad mixed with a sour beer. While this makes for an interesting combination, the sour cherry detracts from what would otherwise be a good quad.

Pretty nice red color. Nice head. A bit sour and and vinious taste with a bit of cherry in it. Aftertaste is a bit sour with some fruity notes, nothing special here.

The beer pours a hazy brown with a light brown head that is mostly lasting. The sweet nose is laced with hints of nuts dark stone fruit and an underpinning of wood mixed with alcohol. The taste is in line with the nose, tasting of nuts, prunes, plums and alcohol. The finish is a dry mix of hops and malts. Overall a great beer.

Malt and fruit aroma with a reddish-brown color. Slightly fizzy and thin - fairly easy going down. Unlike many Belgian ales I’ve tried, there isn’t much distinct clove or spice taste; instead, the taste is mostly malty, slightly hoppy - reminds me of a light barleywine due to its bitterness and subtle but obvious alcohol taste. I only taste the slightest hint of cherries, which helps to somewhat balance the bitterness of this brew. A heavy, full-bodied, beer-drinker’s beer for sure, but slightly disappointing in its lack of complexity.

Poured darkish dull red-brown with thin, long lasting head. Aroma is malty with a funky sharpness. Thick, smooth, well balanced, initially the perception is the the acidity and the spritely carbonation, which yields to a broad malt profile followed by a long bitter finish with some alcohol.

Overall very tastey but not as memorable as some of the best beers in the style. The cherry flavor comes through and adds a hint of sourness to go with the sweet carmel flavors. The mouthfeel is smooth but i find it a bit thin.
