Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

750 ml bottle from Systembolaget, shared with a friend. Complex, vinous aroma with a lot of fruitiness. Flavour is pretty much the same. Quite sweet with a light acid note from the kriek, which makes tis very special. Ommegang seems to have catched the belgian taste (from two belgian styles) here, in a very good way. Palate is great, very smooth and nice. Very nice abt, one of the better ones I’ve tasted and it carries the alcohol very well. Balanced! Reminds me a bit about Chimay Blue. To bad I doesn’t have a bottle to store.

Pours an amber color with a thick white head that thins out fast, but maintains a small head. The smell is of german yeast and bitter hops. As you take a sip the initial flavor is really earthy and nutty like almond and sweet caramel. You can really taste the belgin yeast and that barnyard funk that comes with it. The finish is smooth and full of caramel malt with other rich flavors and hop bitterness.

2007 bottle. Opaque red pour with a thick yellow head. Tons of fruit on the nose and a little alcohol. Lots of dark fruit, cherry, and a woody aftertaste. Hides its alcohol really well. Good beer.

Bottle - pours a ruddy copper with a lightly off white head that quickly dissolves into a light slim of bubbles with some lively carbonation visible. Aroma is spicy and tart with yeasty phenols, alcohol and cherry & apple. Flavor is initially sweet & malty then the yeasty spice and lambic character w/ cherries, raisins, cedar/woody notes and tart flavors become present. Finishes with a faint alcohol that becomes stronger as the glass warms with a dry, spritzy finale.

Bottle, 75cl. Reddish brown colour with a beige head. Sweetish aroma with notes of wood, yeast, candy, cherries & apples. Malty, caramelly sweet taste with slightly sourish notes.

The liquor store close to the house here just recently picked this one up so I had to give it a shot. Pours a beautiful coppery reddish color with a very persistent light cream colored head. Aroma is of sweet dark fruit and booze soaked cherries. A bit of a boozy aroma here. Way too much carbonation in the mouthfeel of this one. Taste is of booze, some cherries, some dark fruit, and maybe a little oak or something kind of woody. Not a favorite after having this. It was just OK.

I really could drink this by the pint which is way crazy, but it is all too easy to let them slide with this one. The nose is full of blood and faint cherry. The palate is tart and bubbly with a hint of chocolate. Good concealment of alcohol too.
