Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Drank it with Juanco at Hop Devil Grill in NYC. Wow. Really enjoyed it. Spicey, raisiny,in your mouth flavors. Complex, well balanced and warming.

I really could drink this by the pint which is way crazy, but it is all too easy to let them slide with this one. The nose is full of blood and faint cherry. The palate is tart and bubbly with a hint of chocolate. Good concealment of alcohol too.

Bottle. BB 1 june 2010. Reddish brown color. Somewhat closed aroma of raisins, dates, rye, tobacco, strawberry, some yeast and phenolics. Hints of bitter chocolate and sour cherries. Also a hint of oak. Soft, pearly and silky mouthfeel. Effervescent. Slightly sour and with a definitive yeast bite. Together with a piece of chocolate the beer feels fresher and fruitier and the bitterness fades. This one will benefit from aging.

750 ml corked bottle. Mostely lasting, medium-sized dense beige head. Ruby brown color. Aroma of fruits, mainly cherries, along with caramel, butterscotch, cookies and yeast. Medium sweet and malty taste. Lot of fruitiness, raisins, plums and cherries. Notes of chocolate, wood, burnt sugar and alcohol. Well-bodied. Thick mouthfeel. Malts and lingering bitterness in the finish. Excellent.

Bottle. Cloudy red-brown, big head, takes a while to dissipate. Gorgeous beer. Aroma isa bit of molasses, dark fruit (cherries), some alcohol. Dry body, flavor has prominent cherry and dark malt with a sweet finish, a bit dry. Hint of alcohol burn. Lively carbonation, full bodied, bit creamy.

A dark brown ale that has a foamy head. Smells nice, hard to pinpoint one strong scent. Tastes nice--cherry and fruit. Strong alcohol after taste.

Bottled. Very complex. A ghost of a kriek playing in the background of an ale. Sweet and sour, lots of fruit. I’d love some bottles of this stacked away!

Brown/Red pour with a decent size head. Aroma is very complex...toffee, cherry, syrupy berries, and a certain earthiness. Taste was as complex as the aroma, with chocolate and (maybe) dates coming through. Felt thick on the palate and it lingered, despite the sharp carbonation that become more apparent as you progress through the glass. Somewhere between the taste and the aftertaste, the alcohol becomes overly apparent, which does take away from the overall drink.
