Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

2007 bottle. Really needs to warm up to be a decent beer. Pours an opaque reddish brown with a creamy tan head. The nose is dusty and flat at first. Maybe a little woody toast? Over time some lovely cherry begins to open up, but It’s very subtle. Sweetness develops a little bit, but the malt is very dry for the style. Low carbonation. Not super thick, not super watery. Substantial, but not crazy. It works. Sweeter than the nose suggested, but very restrained. Big toast. Maybe even oak? I’m just not 100% sure. The cherry is fairly obvious, but the sweetness is so light that this comes across sharper and toastier than I think is best for this beer. The alcohol is well hidden. The finish is where the alcohol pops out a bit over the toasty malt. A bit of acidity. I wish there was a more supple malt backbone to hold this beer upright!

Pours an amber brown color with no head. Aroma of rich malt with cherries and alcohol. Flavor of cherries with rich malt and alcohol, sweet and rich, I like that ! Light to medium body, oily texture, lively carbonation. Very good !

I don’t know about this. I felt it was kind of sticky and cloying. At times it was delicious, at times the cherry was too much. I don’t know, but as of right now I have no intentions on trying this in the near future.

Bottle: Poured a very thick looking dark brown. No head. Aroma is sweet alcohol. Taste is not really what I expected. I was thinking this was going to be more sickly sweet than it actually is. Cold winter day sipper.

Smell is dark cherry and apple. Thought it would be sweet but it had a nice mellow taste... not to over the top

Ruby red color, light head. Nice lacing. Aroma of light apples, sweet cherries. Expected it to be syrupy, not the case. Well carbonated, alcohol and candy finish. Flavor of light fruits, dry cherries. Good quad.

Bottle: Not a bad Quad. Pours yellow with a fairly large head. Aroma of fruits (apple, etc). However, flavor is not all that fruity. Flavor of alcohol and a little fruit.

Draft at Max’s. Deep red-brown color. Real intense fruity aroma - hints of apple and cherry. Very fruity with cherry and raisins and maple syrup. Bitter alcohol on the finish. Nice, but a bit too syrupy for me.
