COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

2011 Three Philosophers. 750ml bottle to snifter. Pours a cloudy dark brown with medium to high carbonation and a moderate tan head that fades quickly leaving laces on the glass. Nose is tart with spicy belgian yeast, fruity, cherry. Fruity and tart tart palate, balanced nicely; taste of alcohol is present accompanied by the warm feeling. Medium bodied with a slight syrup mouthfeel but not as heavy. Finish is lasting and sour spicy belgian yeast and alcohol is present. Great ale about as complex as it gets.

750ml bottle poured into a tulip glass. Pours dark brown with a frothy white head. Aroma’s of spice and cherries, Starts sweet with a bitter finish. This is a sticky beer that stays with you. Hides the alcohol well, I wouldn’t peg this for a 9 percent. Overall a good quad, very drinkable.

Bottle from BevMo. Pours hazy, deep brown. Not much to the aroma, but balanced taste that features dried cherries, Belgian yeast and alcohol. Finishes sweet and a little tart. Good but I was expecting more from it.

When I try a Quad, I automatically think of Rochefort Trappistes 10, which isn’t a bad place to start since I don’t love, love that beer. But this Quad seems right off a little light in the pants with only a 9.8%, but maybe that’s a good thing. A abruptly boozy beer isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. So... Pours a cloudy red-brown, with some very active carbonation resulting in a dense, and persistent, tan head. Smells of bready yeasts, berry fruit, soft malts. Tastes full of carbonation, fruits, yet dry, yet really not that sweet, with some malty hay in there. That carbonation adds some crispness to the palate. Tasty.

Bottle. pours hazy brown with a BIG really long lasting light brown head that leaves some lacing. Nose of malt and dark fruit. Very well balanced, medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, flavors of dark fruit, light sourness, caramel, butterscotch, raisins and a lightly chewy sour sweet finish.

Blown away. Pleasantly surprised. A oaky and dark berry notes in a well rounded Belgian that pokes through. Great beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
