Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

A hazy brown beer with a light brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of nuts, prunes, alcohol, and wood. The flavor is dry woody with notes of prunes and plums before a very hoppy and malt dry end sets in. A wonderful flavor.

(Bottle 75 cl) Pours a slightly hazy, reddish amber with a creamy, off-white head. Fairly complex aroma of yeast, overripe fruit and diacetyl. Full-bodied with fruity notes, sherry-like and again some diacetyl. Almost no bitterness. Interesting. 080107

Bottled. Muddy dark brown. Cherry liqueur aroma. Intensely roasty with lively mouthfeel. Notes of berries and coffee - this is chocolate covered strawberries with champagne! Oaky bière de garde-like lively finish. A complex and very interesting beer.

75 cL bottle at Svea. Pours hazy dark brown with a slowly diminishing tan head. Wineous aroma of cherry and roasted malty notes. Light metallic and mild fruity aroma. Dark fruity and wineous with a solid caramel and roasted flavour beneath. Lingering yeasty, fruity and subdued malty into the finish.

Bottle, 9.0%. Weak fruity aroma. Cloudy orange colour. Very small head. The has some cherry, but it is quite subtle. It is quite thin for its ABV, but it gets better after half a bottle or so.

Bottled (thanks jjpm74!). Deep rubyish brown colourwith mediumsized beige head. Lacing. Aroma is cherries, alcohol, some malts and mild raisins. Flavour is alcohol, cherries, wood, some yeast and raisins. Also some bready notes. A quite pleasant brew, where the alcohol burns nicely in the aftertaste.
