Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

(Bottled) Dark brown/amber color with a medium, beige head. Sweetish, strongly malty, somewhat port-wineous rye-pudding aroma with some dried fruit, cherries and a hint of alcohol. Very fruity, sweetish-malty flavor with quite bitter hops and a long, warming and sweetish, sticky cherry finish. Alcohol is noticeable, but very well hidden. Quite full-bodied, warming palate with balanced, but foamy carbonation. A very nice and tasty, world-class quadrupel. Not quite as balanced as Ommegang, though.

Caged/corked bottle of a classic I’ve somehow been remiss in databasing. Solid head on a bright red beer. Aroma is of a musty farmhouse. Drinks with a nice earthy character with just the simplest hint of the cherry plus-up. This goes great with chocolate desserts. (#3519, 2/23/2009)

75cl bottle @ HJHansen, Odense. Pours cloudy amber with a reddish hew and a small creamy white head. Nose is sweet of yeast, winegums, alcohol, caramel and fruit. Sweet and vinous with some port notes. Warming alcohol. A sipper. Nice!

Poured a hazy brownish red color with a thin tan lace. Aroma of tart cherry and spice. Taste of pepper, caramel, cherries and some yeast as well. Reminds me of a candy apple.

Bottled 2004 Vintage; Tasted September 19, 2004: Solid mahogany color with a medium sized head. Nose of alcohol and bread. The taste was more of the same with a good dose of malt thrown in. I really couldn’t find the cherry taste. Good, but not what I was hoping for.

HBF out of a bottle. Nice deep brown with wierd orange highlights in the head. Head lasts and leaves nice lacing. Great complex malty and yeasty flavors with some fruitiness in the aroma and left over in the aftertaste. Raisons and plum left over from some dark belgian malts - probably spec. B. Gives a nice kick at the end. Very well made.
