Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

UPDATED: JAN 12, 2014 I had to update this review. I have had different tastes from the multiple bottles. The good stuff review is in"I opened the bottle and could smell its wonderful aroma. This beer not only tasted great, but left a cherry after taste in my mouth. I loved this beer. This is the best beer I have ever tasted". These later bottles have been mediocre tasting and lacked the strong cherry flavor. I was not the only one who noticed the difference in taste. These bottles are inconsistent.

Very dark brown, one finger head. Smells sweet, boozy; raisins, cherry, a little salted caramel. Taste is slightly sour cherry juice and alcohol. Body is surprisingly light. Slightly sweet aftertaste lingers. An interesting beer that seems to live in a class of its own.

Bottled. Poured into trappist glass. A caramel brown color with a sizable tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is caramel, raisins, brown sugar sweetness, belgian spices, definitely a yeasty breadiness. Flavor is lots of caramel and cherries up front, more raisins and dark fruits in the middle. yeasty spicy finish. Great quad.

Bottle: Murky, swampy maroon & copper with lots of yeasty sediment floating around. Semi-foamy khaki cap settles in a few moments to a relatively chunky collar. Aroma of figs, raisins, & prunes coated in a bath of caramelized brown sugar, toffee, & sweet caramel. Light cocoa dust, semisweet & fruity esters, baked cinnamon raisin bread, & a small hint of booze. Taste is even more dark-fruity with lots of red grape, raisin, fig, & prune hitting front & center. The sugary sweet aspect is toned down, but still present; lighter brown sugar & toffee coating the estery fruit. Some phenol alcohol comes out with a hint of clove, adding a nice robustness to the beer. Slightly astringent earthy perfume essence on the back-end. I love the nose on this one, but the flavor was just a little step back for me. Still a nice quad, though.

From 12oz bottle, the aroma is cherries, malt and yeast. The Pour is dark amber with nice thick long-lasting head. Cherries, chocolate, nice roasty malt to the taste, with a full creamy mouth-feel. Long-lasting roasty finish with the warmth of the alcohol.

Pours a cloudy dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma is abundant in cherry, and Belgian yeast. Taste is heavy on cherry and dark fruit, sweet, but the finish is somewhat dry, moderate carbonation. Slight alcohol presence detected but not harsh at all. Great desert beer.

Hazy copper-brown with a nice, almost-white head. Yeast, bready malt, booze, candi sugar in the nose. Nice, but not particularly distinctive. Yeast, dried fruit, booze, and a nice earthiness in the flavour. A touch of herbs and brown spice. Not too sweet.

Transfer from BA review on 10-28-12- Poured from bottle into tulip glass Appearance – The brew is poured a hazy ruby red –brown color brew with a nice two finger white head. The head fades over about a two minute time span to leave a moderate amount of lacing. Smell - The aroma is of a yeasty and cherry nature. Mixed with these smells are nice aromas of a bready, sweet caramel, and a nice spicy nature. A rather tasty smelling brew. Taste – The taste begins rather large of a more bready and cherry flavor. As the taste advances the fruit flavor of cherry grows even stronger with some notes of a more yeasty as well as a lighter more “wild” sour and tart flavor coming to the tongue. Other sweet flavors of a more toffee nature then come to the tongue more toward the end of the taste. These when combined with some alcohol and a light toasted flavor leave a balanced, fruity Belgian flavor linger on the tongue as the taste commences. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the just above average side in terms of creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average side. The creamy body is nice for the more yeasty and some of the fruit flavors. But yet with its carbonation the beer is still more on the refreshing and drinkable side (even at ~10% abv.) Overall – A quite tasty beer. A nice quad with all its fruit, yeasty and boozy flavor, but mixed with a nice but balanced cherry flavor. Very enjoyable and drinkable.

Bottle. Clear reddish brown wit ha beige head that lasts on the sides. Aromas of caramel, banana, toffee, cherry, and spice. Flavor is the same. Medium to full bodied, smooth with a bit of warmth on the end. Biter-sweet finish.
