COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Poured from a 375mL bottle. Pours cloudy brown. Tan head; good lacing. Aroma is sweet malt, dark cherry, oatmeal cookie, with hints of spice. Flavour is dark malt, cherry, with sour lambic notes and a nice crisp well-hopped finish. Beautiful Belgian Quad.

When I try a Quad, I automatically think of Rochefort Trappistes 10, which isn’t a bad place to start since I don’t love, love that beer. But this Quad seems right off a little light in the pants with only a 9.8%, but maybe that’s a good thing. A abruptly boozy beer isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. So... Pours a cloudy red-brown, with some very active carbonation resulting in a dense, and persistent, tan head. Smells of bready yeasts, berry fruit, soft malts. Tastes full of carbonation, fruits, yet dry, yet really not that sweet, with some malty hay in there. That carbonation adds some crispness to the palate. Tasty.

Bottle. pours hazy brown with a BIG really long lasting light brown head that leaves some lacing. Nose of malt and dark fruit. Very well balanced, medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, flavors of dark fruit, light sourness, caramel, butterscotch, raisins and a lightly chewy sour sweet finish.

Blown away. Pleasantly surprised. A oaky and dark berry notes in a well rounded Belgian that pokes through. Great beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Not one of my favorites, but very good. I could drink a lot of this. Hazy brown with red tint and light tan head. Aroma is subtle cherries and cardboard. Taste is dark berry, cherry, plum and cinnamon. Carbonation bites your lips. Can taste the alcohol before a sweet finish.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a dark brown body with light edges near the bottom, one finger foamy off-white head with some light clingy lacing that eventually spider webs a bit. The smell had cherries up front with plums, sugar, Belgian yeast, malts, light booze really faint in the background, cherries continue to dominate as the beer warms. The taste was sweet through all of the previously mentioned flavors and combined eloquently together. The palate was about a medium, not sessionable - good sipper over a period of time, sticky sweet cherry aftertaste and a dry finish. Overall, nice to get one of my whales knocked off and am glad I did because I am pretty sure I’ll end up coming back to this, very good for its style and very good to me (as Brewery Ommegang really starts to grow on me), also this is a very sweet cherry forward quad in the smell, taste and mouthfeel.

UPDATED: MAR 23, 2014 Bottled from New Beer Distributors, NYC. Ruby/brown colored, small beige head. Nose of malts, raisins, cherry, reminiscent of La Trappe’s version. Sweet fruity flavor, some cherry, some raisins, malts, pretty high on carbonation. Alcohol is noticeable. It seems a bit rough, as if it requires some more aging to make it more balanced. Still, it?s already quite nice. I?d love to try this again when aged for 5 years or so.
