Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Very dark amber pour, tan/rose head with no lacing. Flavour is nice, a good sour with some fruit flavours, notably sour cherry. Nice one!

Pours a medium to dark brown hue with a large tan head that is mostly diminishing. Pours with a lot of fizz though and it takes a while for it to clear. Aroma is sweet with hints of caramel, malt and brown sugar. Hints of Maple Syrup in there as well. Flavor has an alcoholic beginning to it and ends pretty malty, I must say. Kind of a watered down finish as well. There is a slightly mild dry fruit flavor in there as well - raisins and dates in particular Medium mouthfeel with lively carbonation. Overall a decent brew!

Appearance: brown-reddish color with thick brownish head; aroma: very strong, cherries, raisins, chocolate, alcohol; taste: sweet, malty and rich, dried fruits, chocolate, brown sugar, spices. Full body, low carbonation. Complex and very tasty, this is a fantastic beer!

Bomber. Pours a murky reddish brown. With a fingers worth of head. Aroma is sweet yeast and raisins. Taste is slightly boozy. Malts and caramel. Sweet then light hints of sour left on the palate.

Very dark brown, one finger head. Smells sweet, boozy; raisins, cherry, a little salted caramel. Taste is slightly sour cherry juice and alcohol. Body is surprisingly light. Slightly sweet aftertaste lingers. An interesting beer that seems to live in a class of its own.

Bottled. Poured into trappist glass. A caramel brown color with a sizable tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is caramel, raisins, brown sugar sweetness, belgian spices, definitely a yeasty breadiness. Flavor is lots of caramel and cherries up front, more raisins and dark fruits in the middle. yeasty spicy finish. Great quad.

Bottle: Murky, swampy maroon & copper with lots of yeasty sediment floating around. Semi-foamy khaki cap settles in a few moments to a relatively chunky collar. Aroma of figs, raisins, & prunes coated in a bath of caramelized brown sugar, toffee, & sweet caramel. Light cocoa dust, semisweet & fruity esters, baked cinnamon raisin bread, & a small hint of booze. Taste is even more dark-fruity with lots of red grape, raisin, fig, & prune hitting front & center. The sugary sweet aspect is toned down, but still present; lighter brown sugar & toffee coating the estery fruit. Some phenol alcohol comes out with a hint of clove, adding a nice robustness to the beer. Slightly astringent earthy perfume essence on the back-end. I love the nose on this one, but the flavor was just a little step back for me. Still a nice quad, though.

From 12oz bottle, the aroma is cherries, malt and yeast. The Pour is dark amber with nice thick long-lasting head. Cherries, chocolate, nice roasty malt to the taste, with a full creamy mouth-feel. Long-lasting roasty finish with the warmth of the alcohol.
