Ommegang Witte, a traditional Belgian-style wheat ale with whispers of sweet orange and a touch of tart lemon. Soft and seductive, Ommegang Witte is this summer's version of spicy intrigue and refreshing flavor.

Hazy milky golden hue, quickly fading white head. Lemony nose with a good base of wheat, more orange peel than most, blanche de bruxelles like I find. Slightly grassy and leafy hop finish is interesting, but there’s not much happening before, the wheat is shier than in the nose and the carbonation seems to hide some nuances. Like most Ommegangs, this doesn’t quite reach the original’s simplicity and ease of movement, but it remains by far above average. The yeast is a bit brash and not as characterful as the best authentic wits.

Sampled at le Mondial de la bière 2005. Clear golden color with no head. Ordinary aroma and flavor of wheat and citrus. Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Barely decent witbier which is surprising from Ommegang.

Hazy gold body topped with a decent white foamy head. Spicy wheat aroma with citrusy notes. Refreshing malty/hoppy taste with hints of coriander, citrus, yeast and spices. Ends with a long yeasty/spicy finish. Very good Witbier.

From the 12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy white gold with a snow-white bubbly head. Looks like a fizzy urine sample. Smells of spicy wheat. Funky, fruity yeast. Lightly sour and pungent. Taste has a permeating barnyard funk. Sour wheat malt and spicy. Coriander and lemony. A bit thin but crisp and dry. Nice clean finish with a faint funky aftertaste. No the best but a really good witte.

Ommegang Witte. 1 June 2005. Bottle. Decent head, teeny bubbles, bright white. Light straw in color and a little hazy, with a handful of very small bubbles rising throughout. Just smelling the citrus in this makes my mouth water; lemon peel and lemongrass. This is fine – a standard Belgian wit that stacks up well with the originals. It’s refreshing and crisp. But of all the things I’ve had from Ommegang (and I’m a fan), this brings up the rear. I think that says more about the stellar quality of their regular lineup than anything particularly deficient in the witte. One of the things I like so much about Ommegang is that they have picked a few things, done them extremely well, and stuck to them. I can’t fault them for expanding their lineup in this direction, as the style is only natural. But I hope they’re content to leave it at this, and keeping doing a few things well.

Sweet lemon aroma and flavor. Cluody gold color with white head and good lacing. A decent beer.

Bottle poured a cloudy orange with a light head and lacing. Aroma and flavor of citrus and fruit. Not bad.

Nice white beer. Not very citrusy (is that a word?) compared to some other whites, but still well balanced. $10 for a 6 pack = never again, although it’s still pretty good. Would make a good drunk beer if not for the price tag.
