On my way to this iconic brewery with a suitcase full of marshmallows I admittedly questioned my good judgement. However, sipping on a glass of this beer I am utterly happy that the purist in me stayed at home.

Omnipollo Hypnopompa is an imperial stout brewed with almost 100 kgs of marshmallows and Tahitian vanilla beans (the size of cigars). Virtually no carbonation and boiled a bit extra for good measure this is a beer strictly for the stout inclined.

Batch #1 intentionally has no carbonation. Batch #2 has low carbonationd and cold extracted Hafursa coffee.

Drink now or age for many years.

Cloudy dark brown beer, creamy beige to brown head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: lots of coffee, mocha, sweet touch, hint of vanilla. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: lots and lots of latte (coffee and milk), that’s pretty much all I get. Where’s my vanilla? I guess it’s just so much coffee it just puts me off. #notacoffeeguy

330ml bottle @ Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Pours pitch black, thin tan head. Aroma throws out some chocolate and a light sweetness. Taste is oily and rich with some nice chocolate and coffee hints. Some sweetness emerging as it warms, but marshmallow flavours seemed lacking, as did vanilla. Still, a lovely stout.

Bottle at home. Black pour, thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, licorice, caramel and some sugars. Flavor is quite bitter, slightly sweet and roasty. Decent body.

Bottled. Black colour, mediumsized beigeish brown head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is black cold coffee, some rather sweet marshmallowy notes and some wine gums. Flavour is coffee, some roasted notes, vanilla and some sweet winegum like stuff as well as some hermesetas kind of sweetness. Coffeeish and some sweetish toffee/vanilla in finish.

Bittersweet dark chocolate, toasted malts, filter coffee, a touch of liquorice. Hazy black, medium, beige head. Medium bitter. Dark chocolate, bitter, cacao, more dark roast coffee, oily texture, soft carbonation, full bodied, bitter and dry finish, full of coffee. Decent Imperial Stout, but would have hoped for more given the hype, not getting the Marshmallow at all. Keg at Bottle Shop, Bermondsey.

Appearance: Pours a deep black colour with very little or no head at all. Some very small tan bubbles. Aroma: Intense aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla beans, buttery cream. Some toasty, hazelnut and roasted malt aromas. Don’t have much marshmallow notes. Some alcoholic notes when the glass becomes warm. Taste: Roasted coffee beans and nutty bitter taste at first. Then the dark chocolate, vanilla beans , espresso coffee beans bitterness follows with some liquorice and spice behind. Palate: Full body with oily and slick texture with low carbonation. The finish is boozy with coffee, vanilla beans sweetness and intense roasted malt bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter-sweet with dark chocolate, hazelnut and vanilla (not much marshmallow though). Overall: A very balanced imperial stout between the bitter chocolate and roasted malt and the sweet vanilla beans. Very full and satisfying body and mouthfeel. An imperial stout that is strong yet easygoing and enjoyable. It would be better if the marshmallow aroma can be stronger.
