mephisto (1099), Taiwan Apr 28, 2008 a abundantly carbonated brew with chesnut hued appearance that is topped with a fluffy beige head. the aroma is fruity with hint of caramel and spice. sweet flavor with bitter finish, not sure what’s english about it but it is decent.
DA (2419), Portland, Oregon City, Oregon, USA Aug 19, 2008 Pours dark mahogany with a beige head that leaves solid lacing behind. Smells of a Samuel Smiths beer, sort of minerally with an earthy hop nose. Malts are toasty and nutty, but still thin on the palate. Very similar to Samuel Smith winter warmer, but a touch more hops. The thin palate reminds me of oxidation, but doesn’t have the flavor, just the texture. Vac (2232), San Diego, California, USA May 28, 2008 Bottle at tasting at Chris Fischer’s (from Liars Club) house. Pours with an amber body topped by a thin to medium thick head with some lacing. It’s slightly sweet and malty with a touch ofbread. Light to medium bodied, watery and smooth. jgb9348 (1825), Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA May 27, 2008 Deep brown coloured body with a hazy tan head. Aroma of light spice, roasted malt, coffee and some nuts. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong malty flavour with potent pit fruit sweetness from grapes and prunes on top of nutty characteristics. Aftertaste shows some of the alcohol, a bit of the carbonation and some of the sweetness. Overall, a pretty good beer, but nothing entirely special from a Winter from Europe. I sampled this 500 mL bottle purchased on sale for US$3.99 from Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors in Washington, D.C. on 03-May-2008, sampled on 26-May-2008 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Crosling (1644), Loveland, Colorado, USA May 20, 2008 Bottle, Stockholm, Sweden. A dark brown beer with a full head. Hints of hazelnut and espresso cream in the fairly nice and expressive nose. Flavor shows some similarities, with sherry-like oxidation, and hints of coffee cream. A decent brew. muzzlehatch (4425), Burlington, Vermont, USA May 17, 2008 Updated: May 18, 2008500 ml bottle from Winooski Beverage in Winooski, VT (May 2008) sampled at cellar temperature from a Samuel Smiths pint glass. A rugged, persistent off-white big-bubbled head crowns this translucent dark bronze/maple beauty, leaving thick lacing as it quite slowly disappears....interesting and strange aroma of caramel, vanilla, herbal/piney notes and some odd sweaty characteristics, overall more odd than anything, not unpleasant but not necessarily inviting either....smooth, full and rich body, nice malt extraction, a bit of smokiness and graininess towards the finish, tastes just a bit over the hill which wouldn’t be surprising really, hops are quite muted and dry, some piney/resinous notes show up with a bit of warmth....carbonation rather low and natural. Solid; I wish I could find an ESB or ESA this good available where I am for less than the $6 this sucker cost.
