3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tasted 2/27/08. 500ml bottle. Hazy with a ruby brown hue. Spotty off-white head. Cocoa toffee and mild berry aromas. Toasty and malty. Medium bodied with good effervescence. Toffee malts and a bitter finish. Good body and a good hop palate. Notes of tart apples. Nice.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
In short: Very drinkable earthy and nourishing English Ale.
How: Bottle 750ml. Tasting session with Montreal crew
The look: Almost clear copper body with a medium beige head
In long: Very pleasant nose of aromatic hops with a tea-like perfume. Really smooth mouthfeel with earthy butterscotch and honey. Some tree leaves and woody hops bring a nice bitterness. Very earthy. Body is fuller than usual for the style. Nice session ale. I usually expect a bit more punch from so called “winter beers”, must be the climate change.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a clear dark amber color with a thin white head. Interesting aroma of herbs, spices and fruits. The flavor also has herbs, spices and fruits, but feels less interesting than the aroma. The body is light with a creamy texture and gentle carbonation.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
My Bottom Line:
A gripping leafy hop presence surrounds the Ringwood-like yeasty butterscotch touch of this well-malted, quaffable English-style Ale.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam tops the dark copper.
-Carbonation is quiet, increasing this beer’s drinkability.
-Base malts offer a good cereal crunch which supports the caramel leanings.
-There is some light fruitiness throughout, although it does not affirm itself fully.
-The finishing hop bitterness is lengthy and very enjoyable.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle: Caramel color, thick tan head, nice lacing. Nose of chewy earthy malts, some fig and russet notes. Fruit and hop are vague. The flavor is dry and musky, some bitterness speaks through all that muddled malt nonsense. The finish is a little nutty, some earthy hops and a touch of diacetyl. Bready mouthfeel and a zesty light roast and yeast tail.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 16/20
16.9oz bottle. Thick super deep brown-red toffee stained-glass color. Fills the palate, very complete thick and malty beer. Semi-dry finish, super enjoyable. Mild spicing perhaps, more subtle than an Anchor Christmas but in the same genre of beers. Another quality beer from Scandinavia.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a nice very slightly fogged amber with a small crème head off a careful pour. Nose is pretty boring. But the flavor is very nice indeed. Starts off nice and hoppy. Then I get some nice funk on the edge. Then I get a kind of smoked aftertaste. I like this. Feel has a nice level of carbonation to it. Liquid is smooth. This is very drinkable and has an interesting flavor profile to boot. Definitely worth trying. I wish I had more. I wonder if this would ever become available on tap.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
A deep chestnut body with a weak tan head. Aroma was nutty with some toffee notes and salad greens (odd). After some of the other winter ales I’ve sampled, this seemed rather light. The flavor was nutty and slightly sweet but had an odd aftertaste.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
500ml from Rodman’s, D.C. Dark beer with impressive head/carbo, but a fairly anonymous aroma. Very hoppy, bordering on aggressive for the style, with only modest spices and winter flavor. Almost like an alternately spiced Celebration, but not as good.
