Bottle @ home. Pours a dark maroon body with an almost non-existent tan head. Sweet fairly dark malty aroma with hints of red licorice, cherries, and other red fruits. Low carbonated, tangy, slightly bitter, red fruity, medium malty body. Sort of sour, sweet, and brown malty finish. Not as strong of flavor as most English Strong Ale.

Doesn’t look like much, laggerish light after initial foam.Somewhat cheesy aroma. The taste is somehwhat hoppy and refreshing. A natural casklike carbonation. Bit of light lemonlime aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel.

Tap at Churchkey. Pours a clear red amber topped by a medium tan head leaving admirable yellowish sheets of lace. Nose is at first mild cheesy hops. Taste is straightforward bitter and astringent with small red fruits and a lot of tannic tea character. Over slatted grain feel. Too astringent. Hop presence is older and cheesy. Feels like a DIPA gone wrong. Sweaty and blander taste. Stinging, sharp carbonation. Mild paper character.

My Bottom Line:
A gripping leafy hop presence surrounds the Ringwood-like yeasty butterscotch touch of this well-malted, quaffable English-style Ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam tops the dark copper.
-Carbonation is quiet, increasing this beer’s drinkability.
-Base malts offer a good cereal crunch which supports the caramel leanings.
-There is some light fruitiness throughout, although it does not affirm itself fully.
-The finishing hop bitterness is lengthy and very enjoyable.

Bottle @ Cole’s Christmas Tasting 2007. Mahogany brown body with a small beige head. Odd aroma, light fruit notes and tangy malt character. (6+) Similar fruit and malt in the flavour, light caramel notes. Average palate. Not unpleasant but fairly unremarkable.

(Draught at Bishops Arms, Västra Hamngatan, Göteborg) Clear brown color, small tan to brown head. Fresh scent with a roasted touch. Hoppy bitter taste with some roasted coffee right in the beginning and then again in the aftertaste. Nice high bitterness. Medium mouthfeel.

On tap. Pours with a clear copper hued body with a white ring for a head. Aromas are malty, bready, toffee, caramel, mild oxidation, herbal, earthy and woodsy hops. Malty overall. Flavors are nutty, malty, tea like. Caramel, toffee, watery, pretzel and nougat. Watery mouthfeel with mild carbonation. Lasting notes of stale pretzels.

Pours a transparent copper orange with a well-lacing light tan head. Aroma of earthy, dark caramel malts with some English hops. Starts semi-sweet with an earthy grainy maltiness and some citrusy flavor hops toward a more bitter, thinner and drier finish. Seems like a pretty standard ESB.

Dark brown with an ecru head. Brown sugar, pecans, caramel aroma. Nutty caramel palate rounded out by vague dark fruit character. A little beguiling, but very good.
