500ml bottle, as Vintage 2008. Pours a slightly cloudy, deep orange/amber, with a thin white head. Spicy, mature aromas, marzipan, leather, hazelnuts, dried apricots, caramel, fudge, butter, wood? Semi-sweet, full bodied, high bitterness, low CO2. The taste is likewise matured, lots of secondary flavours, marzipan, leather, tobacco, chocolate, walnuts, almonds. There is, however, also a slightly sour note, and the alcohol burns through rather intensely. The best offering I’ve had from this brewery, bot not quite top notch. (2012-02-29)

Vintage 2007, 25cl, bottle#: 21394 Dark amber colored, clear with minimal head. Caramel, lightly toasted malts, dark fruits and nutty aroma with a little alcohol. Taste is sweet, heavy, no bitterness, and I think got umami. Full bodied and thick and creamy on a palate. Very nice barley wine overall.

Rating #586, bottle from SuperBest labeled Ørbæk Vintage 2008

It’s a hazy red-brown beer, but it only manages to create a small and unstable head when poured into the glass. Aroma is a surprise with cherries, blackcurrant, elderberry soup, yeast and alcohol - much more fruity than I dared to hope for. However, flavour is a bit destroyed by the heavy alcohol. Other flavours are yeast and a bit berries. There’s honeyish sweetness as well, but the flavor never appears as fully developed as the aroma, and the beer always seems unbalanced with the massive alcohol and sharp bitterness at one side, and an undeveloped sweetness with lack of the berries from the aroma on the other side. The honeyish sweetness is probably supposed to hide the alcohol, but it never succeeds. Palate is comfortably soft, but quite thin, especially for a 12% Barley Wine. It is a drinkable beer, but I guess it would be better if matured. If it already has matured since 2008 if not impressed though, it ought to be more round, soft, sweet and balanced. I really can’t figure out what’s going on with this beer.

(50 cl bottle - don’t remember from where, but it’s a 2006 vintage brewed to celebrate their 100 year anniversary. Capsule says "B21" and best before August 29th 2010) Pours a hazy copper brown with little, off-white head that laces the sides of the glass. Aroma of earthy malts with a whiff of cardboard. Medium-bodied with watery texture and soft to lively carbonation (impressive for a 5 year old beer). Taste is .. sweet, sour, alcohol and not very harmonic. I was quite disappointed with this beer as it was the first I chose to store and the label says it’s a good beer for that purpose. I guess they didn’t expect people to store it for 5 years, which is a bit odd considering the ABV.

11-FEB-2011, bottle 2@home with Ulkløbben, from "Superbest". In a flight of three barley wines this is the sweetest. Not better than the "standard" GB Barley Brew. Very very sweet, malty (on the light side!), fruity (peach...?). Ends a little alcoholic. So this is a couple of years old? Hmm. Ørbæk suggests saving this for some years, but for what reason? Hoping for an improvement? I am saving my second bottle. I can do that without being tempted to open it prematurely... ...I do not expect any improvement, but hey...why not.two or three years? ..or perhaps more? Meciocre barley wine from Ørbæk.
