Oregon Trail Bourbon Porter is a beer as big as the West. Masterfully brewed in the true pioneer spirit. This robust porter is aged in Kentucky oak bourbon barrels. The result is a deep mahogany elixir, rich with oaky smoothness, bold bourbonesque aroma, with hints of fruit and vanilla. Good at either end of the trail.

Black with a light tan head. Aroma is bourbon, chocolate, molasses, wood, toffee. Full bodied, syrupy mouthfeel, sweet and complex on the palate with a hint of booze on the finish. Taste is bourbon, chocolate, caramel, toffee, raisins, dates. Tasty

Bottle (#9). Brown pour with an off white head. Malty aromas. Loads of caramel malts with fruit eaters and oak. Below average body with a decent mouthfeel.

Bomber. Pours a murky brown color with a small beige head. A big woody bourbon vanilla nose. The flavor is vanilla, chocolate, heat, a big burst of fruity berries, toffee. The overall flavor has lots of woody oxidized notes. Plum and heat. Thin palate. I like this a lot. Solid.

Pours barely translucent coffee brown. Roast malt aroma has woody bourbon overtone and note of molasses. Bold flavor has roast malt, bourbon, woody and molasses notes. Texture is smooth, if not too fizzy or firm.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown color with a moderate lighter brown head on there. Nose is very heavy on the bourbon with some wood mixed in, but none of the standard porter aromas. Taste is quite sweet from the bourbon, with a little roasting on the back end, but is too dominated by the bourbon for my tastes. Does go down smooth, though.

Pour from a bomber, shared by Yamamoto-san at Q-Brick. Dark fruit nose, with considerable bournbon, and some fumes. Dark translucent brown color. Light prunes stewed in bourbon, rather thin maltiness. Thin body. The barrel aging is pretty nice, but as a porter it is not at all "robust."

Bomber. Nose of vanilla and bourbon mostly. A bit of tartness, vanilla and bourbon flavor. Light body. Bourbon is a bit much.

Batch #8? (Says #8 at the centre of the picture), listed at 10,6% ABV. Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish lighter brown head. Aroma of alcohol, bourbon, rye, grain, rich chocolatre, roasted malt, pit fruits, raisins and somehow even more sugars and depth - very nice and flavourful. Full-bodied; Rich bourbon flavours coupled with vanilla, oak, cedar, grain and roasted malt, but this one shows more like a barley wine with big hits of alcohol and pit fruits also accompanied with some raisins and figs. Aftertaste shows a very boozy finish with the bourbon and oak taking centre stage. Overall, a very nice and rich beer with a lot of flavour and depth but perhaps not enough complexity in the style department - nice but after you had a few sips, it didn’t change too much. That said, perhaps the aging helped/aided to that? I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Belmont Station in Portland, Oregon on 27-September-2013 for US$14,55 sampled at home in Washington on the opposite end of the country on 26-October-2014.

"Full rich aroma of chocolate, vanilla and graham cracker/s’more. Abv well hidden though this is quite the decadent beer. First impression of Oregon Trail is a good one. Deeeelicious..."

Batch #4: Poured from bottle to glass. Dark hue with tan head. Aroma is bourbon, oak, vanilla, toffee, roast. Mouthfeel is nice with a medium body and crisp carbonation. Taste is sweet but not cloying with a wood tannin drying following and ethanol finish. Overall this is an enjoyable brew.
