Commercial Description:

Contract brewed by Elgood for BrewLab/Darwin.
Full bodied porter, hopped with Kent’s hops.

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When opened, however, they "tasted like old, wet boots" according to Dr. Keith Thomas, renowned brewer and microbiologist. When he examined the beer under a microscope, he found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, he brewed a porter using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

12oz bottle from The Party Source. Pours dark brown with a medium beige head. Roasty aroma of malt and chocolate. Roasty flavor with coffee and chocolate. Finishes a bit thin, but otherwise not bad.

11.2 oz. bottle. Pours a very thin head, no laciing, over a clear brown (SRM 20) body....nose rich in coffee, chocolate.....taste is similar with rich roasted malts, coffee, cocoa, finishes dry.....rather light on the mouth feel, somewhat watery, carbonation medium. Interesting, but the more modern recipes appeal to me more.

pours brown, no head, clear around the edges. aroma is roasty, mostly toffee and coffee. flavor is a bit too subtle, some malty sweetness and hints of leather. gets better as it warms, but still a bit too watery. somewhat thin body and flat finish.

Bottle bought at Yankee Spirits. Rich dark brown. Tan head fades into a lasting cap. Aroma is very chocolate cake, touch of licorice and icing. Body is slightly thin yet the flavors are packed into every mouthful. A nice combination of quaffability and solid, pure, dry chocolate flavors. Touch sweet, touch roast, nothing overpowers anything else. Simply good.

The taste of roasted malts really comes through on this wonderful beer. to think that they came up with this old recipe is great. Tasted this at a beer fest and would like to get a couple of bottles.

Aroma of yeast, chocolate and roasted barley. Pours dark brown, nearly black with a small khaki head. Flavor of chocolate, roast barley and raisins. Clean finish, refreshing for such a dark beer.

Backlog Night! This porter pours a nice deep reddish brown with a medium tan head with some nice lace. The aroma is very pleasant with a lot of chocolate right up front with some mild plum, roastiness and a bit of alcohol. The flavor is kind of rustic in it’s own way, I’m not sure how to put my finger on what I mean by "rustic" but in this case it’s a good thing. the flavor certainly showcases chocolate with some roastiness and almost a rye character, it finishes off with some dry fruitiness or raisins and a mild hop profile. Everything seems to balance very nicely in this one/ the mouth feel is very silky.

A nicely nutty aroma and taste with good complementing earthy notes. Malts are also evident, though in the background. A solid porter.
