Sampled at the 09 MBG Summerfest. Very dark brown pour with some mahogany highlights and a thin tan head. This had tons of super rich coffee roast with some nice notes of cocoa powder and brown sugar and a bitter coffee finish. The body is creamy and full with soft carbonation.

UPDATED: NOV 27, 2011 Draft. Aroma and appearance had my hopes high for this being a great porter. Palate was a little thin and the taste was too light, not really enough there. Drinkable but not one I would choose from this very good brewer. 11/26/11 Growler: Enjoyed the second time much more. Body was medium, nice taste - mild but flavorful. Very good porter.

On tap: The aroma consists of nice blend of dark chocolate and cocoa mixed with some roasted and espresso. Itís a dark brown with some orange highlights and a small beige head that fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. There is a good amount of thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate cocoa and a touch of dark chocolate. There is a faint fruitiness in the background. The finish has light-moderate espresso, light roast, and a touch of sweet vanilla. Itís light-medium bodied with mild carbonation.

Sample at the brewpub: This beer pours a not-quite-opaque black color with a thin beige head that recedes steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. Roasty aroma of coffee and malt, with touches of chocolate. Medium, dry body with a nice roasted coffee character. Notes of dark malt and chocolate are present too. The finish is moderately bitter coffee and hops. Decent overall.

Dark brown, opaque with creamy tan head. Aroma is light roast with dry coffee, very light. Flavor is coffee, espresso, chocolate, some smoke dry. Medium and light carbonation. A bone dry smoked porter.

Sample at OG. Black pour with a thick tan nitro head. Roasted malt and coffee in the aroma with a bit of that undesirable metallic nitro character, but not too much. Roasted malt flavor with a hint of chocolate and a creamy coffee finish thatís a tad thinner than I would have liked. Still a decent brew though, and probably the best they had this evening (no Vanilla Java Porter).

On tap. Pours very dark brown to black with a slight off-white head. Has a roasty coffee aroma. Flavor has lots of roasted coffee, anise, and an earthy, nuttiness. Little bit of dark fruit as well. Slightly on the thinner side, but I like this one.

If I were to have chosen a single beer to try while visiting this might have been it. For a lighter sessionable porter it balances flavor and mildness well. Once again this proves that you donít have to go big (or sour) to create something noteworthy.

Aroma / Appearance - Rusty brown fluid rests idly below an ivory head. Coffee, malt, bakerís chocolate, and a trace of smokiness feel like sitting down to breakfast in a 24 hour diner.

Flavor / Palate - Malt and coffee drive a rough mouthfeel that feels a bit gritty like a bowl of oatmeal. With solid depth the result is a beer that is not forgettable but also not over the top. A full growler and a couple of hours would be the perfect combination for a lazy evening around the house.
