COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ritterguts Gose is a top-fermented, sourish and slightly salty-tasting beer that was first brewed in 1824 – it’s the special beer of Leipzig! The Gose is an own, very old type of beer that does not correspond to the German purity law because Gose is much older than it. Even today, it is still brewed with an admixture of coriander and salt in the traditional way with a special yeast in open fermentation. Its particular character our Gose gets thereby and by lactate fermentation during the maturing.

Brewed by Hartmansdorf until 2014, brewed by Reichenbrand in Chemnitz from 2015

From bottle at Triple Rock Brewing during Sour Sunday 2014. Hazy golden/orange with a small head. Aroma of apples, lemon, some light berries, bread and some salt. Similar taste. Refreshing and with a good tartness. I could drink this again.

Medium fine white head dwindling away over clear amber beer. Medium aroma intensity dominated by dry funky umami-like maltiness, a fresh brew note that is appealing, some background ripe fruit. Complex palate. Citric acidity and sourness with medium carbonation with unripe aple and seltzer saltiness evolving on the midpalate, by finish ending on the tip of the tongue. A journey in the mouth.

I had this on draft and it was the best gose I’ve had. I also had this out of the bottle and it was lacking... The draft version is salty, sour, coriander, and full of life.

50cl bottle pours with a clear copper body that has gold hues and supports a tall full tan head. The aroma offers up sweetened soured apples, some saltiness and a grainy sour mash note. This is an inviting set of aromatics that seem to head off in all directions but lead directly to a nearly hurried sip. The taste starts with a mix of sour citrus and saltiness. Then it gets grainy and sour mash like toward midway. The saltiness doesn’t let up from front to back and works very well with the sour, grainy, earthy and citrus notes. Good stuff. Dig it!

Bottle to pint glass. Clear straw color with white head disappeared quickly. Aroma of lemon and salt lime apple. Lemon tartness appley. Almost like a cider. Salty tart finish. A bit sweet. Taste is better than anything else on this beer.

Taster on tap at Neon’s. Clear orange color, a mild haze. Minimal off-white head. Leaves no lace. Medium body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. Lightly slick. Good texture to it. Some bit of musty maltiness. Lighter carbonation. Good nice tart taste. Good salty wheat aroma. Tasty, satisfying gose.

Draft to taster. Looks good; a very slightly hazy golden orange with lively carbonation but no real lacing. Smells good too; tart and wheaty. Tastes like it smells with some saltiness as well. Slid on the palate. A good example of the style.

I’m still trying to understand what is so great about this style. It tastes like weak, lemony beer. Slightly more lemony than the other example of gose I tried. What’s even more odd is that my two favorite styles of beer are Belgian sours (or other great sour/wilds) AND German pilsners. I guess I just don’t care for them combined. I think this would be better in a weisse beer; or maybe less coriander and more yeast.

Nice sour gose. This one has a great mix of sour, saltiness and residual sweetness. Some sour plum and crab apple here with honey and lemon aromas. Pours orange amber without much head or lacing. Soft carbonation. Nice beer, good balance. Bottle.
