Ritterguts Gose is a top-fermented, sourish and slightly salty-tasting beer that was first brewed in 1824 – it’s the beer specialty of Leipzig. Gose is an own, very old style of beer that does not correspond to the German purity law. Even today, it is still brewed with an admixture of coriander and salt in the traditional way with a special old Gose yeast in open fermentation. Its particular character our Gose gets thereby and by the additional lactate fermentation.

Bottle. Pours clear straw yellow with no head. Aroma is very clean lactic and dusty dry grain. Flavor is very a little salty, light fruit and grain sweet, and moderately lactic. Feel is light, lively, sour salivating, watery. Pretty simple but very enjoyable.

UPDATED: APR 30, 2015 50cl bottles both shared and downed alone in pressing summer heat. Admire the full-fledged historicism of the label, in line with reviving this style far beyond the confines of its TV Pilsner Hinterland. Upfront concentrated coriander and pleasant whisps of saltiness dominate the aroma, coating the flat wheyish lactic acids, near-invitingly. Taste is comparable: the rougher edges of a Berliner Weisse kept in check by the spice, guaranteeing high drinkability, almost crisp palate. Perfect balance makes up for the lacking complexitity of this excellent single-purpose thirst quencher. Such a shame this is nowhere to be found on tap within DE, bottles mostly to be had from the ostalgic ossiladen.de. // Update & caveat: since being contract-brewed at new venue Reichenbrand (2015), at least all bottles from the first batch have been spectacularly our of balance and oversalted, like a dose of TUC crackers, or say: just a handful of sodium dumped into a young Berliner Weisse. Odd. Still a great brew though!

Refrigerated 0.5 L brown bottle poured into a glass. Pours clear golden with small off-white head which dissipates quickly. Aroma is tart, light body, medium carbonation, and little lacing. Taste is tart, refreshing, salt, and a hint of coriander. I slightly prefer Westbrook gose over this from my recollection. Good beer
