Ritterguts Gose is a top-fermented, sourish and slightly salty-tasting ale that was first brewed in 1824. It is the beer specialty of Leipzig and the oldest still existing Gose brand in the world. Gose is an own, ancient style of beer that does not correspond to the German purity law. Even today, it is still brewed with an admixture of coriander and salt in the traditional way with the special historic Gose yeast in open fermentation. Its particular character our Gose gets thereby and by the additional lactate fermentation.

Brewed by Hartmannsdorf until 2014 (until 2007 @3.9%), brewed by Reichenbrand in Chemnitz from 2015.

0.5L tap at Gosenchenke Ohne Bedenken (Leipzig). Pours hazy pale with a small white head. Aroma is sour (as expected), with some light malt. Flavor is fairly uni-dimensionally sour with some salt as well. Caraway schnapps helps this! Some sweetness creaps in the middle, but finishes with long, mild sour flavor. Light body with a slick mouthfeel and average carbonation. Overall, the beer is quite similar to a geuze from Belgium, and is certainly an interesting regional beer, but not my favorite style.

Draft. Pours hazy gold with a white head. Pretty standard for what I’ve come to expect from this style--tart lemony notes, moderate acidity, a wheaty base, and some light salty notes. Quite drinkable.

Clear pale orange beer, aery white head, little stable. Aroma: yeasty, fruity, very weird, funky, sourish, hints of meat and dairy. MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: bit salty, sourish, funky, yeast, weird, refreshing, dairy, yoghurt. Aftertaste: funky, bit salty, dairy, weird, yeasty, sourish. Not sure what to think of this.

0.5 l bottle purchased from Hopfen and Maltz in Berlin (great bottle shop!). Very nice gose, not too sour but tart and flavorful. Great sour, easy to drink.

Light yellow body with some white head, fades quickly, kind of vinous looking. Tart aroma, a touch of mineral and citrus. Taste is sour and milky in a good way. Very smooth. Kind of somewhere in between a beer, a wine and a cider. Nice gose.

Bottle. Hazy golden pour with small lacings on top. Nose has yoghurt, light lacto, some lemon and cereal. Taste has again yoghurt, lemon juice, light tartness and light bitterness. This was really good!

Con questa temperatura, e con questa bassa gradazione, una birra del genere comincerei a berla alla mattina, e finirei non so quando. Molto ma molto godibile!!!

Bottle. Moderate grain and hay for the malt, light lemon for the hops, light mustiness for the yeast, with hints of coriander and vinegar. Head is small and fizzy, and is quickly diminshing and no lacing. Color is hazy amber. Flavor starts moderately to heavily acidic, then the long finish is lightly acidic, sour and salty. Palate is on the lighter side of medium, watery with a lively to fizzy carbonation and a tart finish. Not very appealing to the eye, but this Gose has a Berliner Weisse tartness with a great refreshing flavor and palate.
