Ritterguts Gose is a top-fermented, sourish and slightly salty-tasting ale that was first brewed in 1824. It is the beer specialty of Leipzig and the oldest still existing Gose brand in the world. Gose is an own, ancient style of beer that does not correspond to the German purity law. Even today, it is still brewed with an admixture of coriander and salt in the traditional way with the special historic Gose yeast in open fermentation. Its particular character our Gose gets thereby and by the additional lactate fermentation.

Poured a golden to orange color with a white head. Aroma was of sea water, pale grain, yeast. Flavor similar, not as tart as American versions, but nice to taste a traditional one.

Bottle. Oh my, something went clearly wrong with this one. Lots of white, ugly floaties, almost no head. Smells like cheese-flavoured corn crisps, subtle lactic notes, minor malt and that’s it. It was hard to convince myself to even try it after the aroma turned out to be an abomination. Salty-sour flavour, light malty, minor fruit notes (apples, pears), coriander very much in the background. Again a prevalence of cheese notes, this time in the flavour. The worst gose I’ve tried by far and possibly the biggest disappointment in terms of beer that I’ve had.

UPDATED: MAR 13, 2016 Bottle 50cl. [160311]. Poured into a tumbler. Hazy yellow golden, small frothy off-white head, mostly diminishing, minimal lacing; sour nose, vinegar, barnyard, apple juice, gooseberry; mild taste, medium sweet and light to medium sour, vinegar, sour apple, light salty notes, long duration, dry sour finish; light body, watery to sticky texture, mild mouthfeel, average carbonation; somewhat one-dimensional but refreshing.

500ml bottle. Slightly hazy yellow-tan body. Not much of a head. Artificial almost lemon-lime aroma. I get real big lemon notes, lemonade. Salty and dry too. Pretty big sour tones,, but real soft/absent malt backbone. Sort of one-dimensional, but a welcome variation from most US examples for my palate. Good.

Orange, trüb. Säuerlicher Geruch mit Koriander. Volles Mundgefühl, leicht restsüß. Sauer im Abgang. Sehr erfrischend.

50 cl (1 pt 0.9 fl. oz.), bottled. Pours cloudy yellow with a nice white head. Aroma: Wood, sour notes, potatoes. Root cellar aroma, earthy tones. Taste: Smoked tones, pleasant easy sourness. Salt and herbal spices, I can find some soapiness (coriander). Wood and some old wine barrels, decayed wood. Lactic acid. Palate: Light-medium body, like brine. Wood, oak, even vinous aftertaste. Not bad at all. Quite notable saltiness.

Light yellow, near straw, with a golden hue. Almost no head, quite bubbly like a vernors. Salted, white, doughy bread. Light lemon, apple cider acidity. Tastes almost like a vernors (ginger ale), moderately low cooking spice. Very mellow body, sour is moderately low, not mouth puckering by any means, more complementary. No hops, more of a dry grainy bitterness. Very drinkable, mild, clean.

Sale, coriandolo, limone, acidità sono quello che cerchi in una Gose ed ovviamente sono quello che trovi in questa birra. Ottima per resettare il palato
