COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ritterguts Gose is a top-fermented, sourish and slightly salty-tasting beer that was first brewed in 1824 – it’s the beer specialty of Leipzig. Gose is an own, very old style of beer that does not correspond to the German purity law. Even today, it is still brewed with an admixture of coriander and salt in the traditional way with a special yeast in open fermentation. Its particular character our Gose gets thereby and by the additional lactate fermentation.

World Beer Awards London: World’s Best Gose 2013, Europe’s Best Gose 2014, World Beer Idol 2016: Gose Gold
Brewed by Hartmannsdorf until 2014, brewed by Reichenbrand in Chemnitz from 2015

Sampled in a big bottle. Was recommended as it was an original version of a sour. Really enjoyed this beer which was refreshing and citrus base. Very nice brew. Would certainly try to find again.

Bottle shared by Phil. Slightly hazy golden yellow beer, white head. Nose is woody, tart and slightly lactic notes, apples. Flavor is tart, apple peel, salty notes, mild lactic notes again, lemony tartness in the finish. Crisp and refreshing, the cidery apple notes are very nice.

Gosa molto buona e dissetante, salata al punto giusto. Al naso e in bocca si avvertono anche abbondanti sentori citrici, aciduli, che ricordano i lambic. Leggermente fruttata.

The balance between the lactate, coriander and salt is perfect. But it is not as sour as the American versions that I love!

Pour was a hazy to cloudy deep orange gold with near nil head and lacing. Aroma of hay, citrus, earth, herbs. Flavor of the same, faint spicing, faint sour apples, wood, lemons, some cheese, some salt. Mouthfeel moderate carbonation, decent body for style, acidic. Pretty tasty and refreshing.

Pours clear golden with almost no head. Aromas of farmhouse, minerals, musk, rye bread. Taste is very earthy with mineral saltiness. Mouthfeel is light bodied with medium carbonation.

Poured a golden to orange color with a white head. Aroma was of sea water, pale grain, yeast. Flavor similar, not as tart as American versions, but nice to taste a traditional one.

Bottle. Oh my, something went clearly wrong with this one. Lots of white, ugly floaties, almost no head. Smells like cheese-flavoured corn crisps, subtle lactic notes, minor malt and that’s it. It was hard to convince myself to even try it after the aroma turned out to be an abomination. Salty-sour flavour, light malty, minor fruit notes (apples, pears), coriander very much in the background. Again a prevalence of cheese notes, this time in the flavour. The worst gose I’ve tried by far and possibly the biggest disappointment in terms of beer that I’ve had.
