Boystout (900), Chisinau, Moldova Aug 18, 2004 Many, many bottles when in Scotland... Quite difficult to understand what is it and to rate it properly. A combination of porter, stout, Scottish ale and dunkel. Ruby, roasty, coffeeish, caramelly, dusty, malty, sweet and bitter, dry and burnt... Complex, to say the least. pughy1957 (61), Rugby, England Aug 17, 2004 Cracking dark ale, plenty of flavour especially dark roasted malt which predominates.
TheBeerGod (3143), Newport News, Virginia, USA Aug 8, 2004 Had this at the Bier Garden in Portsmouth VA on 8-7-04. Dark brown body with a small brown head. Aroma is sweetened with hints of maloasses mixed with malt and smoky or burnt wood. Taste is also smoky and malted with more of the roasted flavor coming through moreso than the sweeter notes or bitterness. Mouthfeel is carbonated and well rounded. Smokiness lingers throughout the finish with the malt being in the backdrop. Good beer! lachesis (759), St Idesbald, Belgium Jul 27, 2004 Great beer with a nice redbrown color and a ivory creamy head. This is a typical scotish ale with a light to medium sweetness. It has a intens fruity aroma and a medium body and a good dosis of fine malts and hints of fresh roasted coffeebeans. In the afthertaste there is a nice boost of nobel hops. Fine bitterness in the end. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA Jul 6, 2004 Deep garnet color with a tan frothy head. Aroma was coffee, some spice, some smoke. Toffee. Caramel. Who knows. Medium body with a slightly watery texture. Flavor was whiskey, caramel, some smoke, roasted coffee. Good stuff. SubstanceT (1090), Saint Louis, Missouri, USA Jul 5, 2004 Rusty copper with a big long lasting tan head. The nose is malty caramely and funky taste with a tfunky cream and malts. Blah Hildigöltur (5109), København, Denmark Jun 30, 2004 Dark brown coloured. Malty aroma with notse of cinnamon. Pleasant malty and sweet flavour. Dorwart (1807), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA Jun 23, 2004 Nice dense, creamy head of fine bubbles. Damn I love the smell of a good scottish ale. Big malt but creamy and milky with a touch of licorice. Color is a murky dark brown. Very smoky flavor with more malts and a decent helping of hops to offset the malt. Flavor is a little lacking. Finish is not what I expected. Thin and fizzy with a strange sour and burnt sensation on the tongue. Feels like more than 4.6% alcohol also. A decent scottish ale that starts off great but ends kind of dissapointing.
