COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"The nose on this beer is ripe and fruity with slightly vinous esters, married to interesting hop notes - the colour of a glorious red ruby wine."

Pours a dark ruby red, almost black, with a thick, creamy tan head. Aroma is a little fruity but mostly malt and alcohol. Taste has a hint of coffee with a smooth finish, almost sweet on the back end. Leaves a slick finish on the palate. Not at all what I expected, but still darn good.

Brown creamy head. Black colour. Aroma is malty with light coffee, cherries and dried fruits notes. Flavor is malty too with fruity (red and dried fruits) and chocolate tones, ending in a balanced, moderately fruity and gently chocolaty finish. Medium bodied,

500 ml bottle. Clear deep dark ruby brown, slight hue, tan foam fades. Aroma and taste of dark fruit and chocolate/caramel /toffee malt. sweet medium roast, mild bitterness. Soft carbonation, medium bodied, lightly hopped. A bit vinous towards the finish. Very nice but still: NFL (Not For Lagerboys)

superspak (2419) - Michigan, USA - FEB 1, 2014
500 ml bottle into pint glass, bottled on 6/6/2011. Pours lightly cloudy nearly opaque dark brown color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, toffee, molasses, toast, raisin, plum, pear, apple, dark bread, light roast, herbal, light pepper, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark malt and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, dark bread, toast, molasses, raisin, plum, pear, light roast, herbal, light pepper, light leather, and toast/yeast earthiness. No bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, dark bread, toast, molasses, raisin, plum, pear, light roast, herbal, and toast/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied; with a fairly creamy, smooth, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 4.6%. Overall this is a damn nice Scottish ale! All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Appearance- very dark with a ruby tint. Small, bubbly beige head. Aroma- lots of chocolatey malt, sweetness, maltiness. Taste- bitter chocolate, cocoa, burnt notes, some plum and raisin, quite a short finish with hints of coffee. Very drinkable, and full-flavoured for the abv. Impressive.

pictoman (429) - British Columbia, CANADA - JAN 1, 2014
Poured from 500mL bottle. Dark reddish brown (near black) with tan head. Dark fruits predominant in the aroma with some mild sweet roasted malt, a little smokey. Flavour doesn’t show the fruit at all, just some mild smokey roast, but mostly watery. Quite disappointing from the aroma.

Bottle from BeerRitz in Leeds. Pours black with a tan head. Quite sweet and fruity. Meaty with red wine notes and a touch of coffee. A wee bit spicy too. Interesting.

Unbelievable beer, without doubt my favourite stout. Full bodied and smooth to drink with a lovely nose. This is one beer I would go back to again and again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

500ml bottle from Morrisons. Thick bubbly light tan head, very dark body with just a touch of amber. Good lacing. Nose is berries, coffee and chocolate. Flavour of roast nuts, chocolate, coffee, berries on the finish and more chocolate. Rich, creamy mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Really tasty.

500ml bottle at home. Jet black with a thick off-white head. Big roasted malt aromas, coffee and dark chocolate. Taste has more, bitterness more than sweet. Good long finish and pretty full-bodied for the strength.
