Stefano (1321), Esbjerg, Denmark Jan 14, 2009 Dark amber with a nice lasting white head. Sweet aroma with malt and caramel. Taste has some liquorice and is quite sweet. Toasty finish. RichJ7 (1175), Cullman, Alabama, USA Jan 12, 2009 Dark brown pour with a half-inch beige head. Aroma and taste of smokey peat and dark malts. Not overly sweet, mostly dry fruit and dry hops. Eh. Ok, I guess. Probably would not buy again. bobinlondon (786), Harrow, Greater London, England Jan 2, 2009 Bottle from Morrisons. Deep mahogany colour, a chocolatey, smokey aroma, and a malty, toffeeish, smokey, whiskeyish palate.
kempicus (350), Wellington, New Zealand Jan 2, 2009 Pours a dark chocolate with a coca cola head, nose is a dark cherry chocolate gateaux with a hint of coffee. Very smooth palate full of light chocolate, coffee and dark fruit balanced with a nice dryness in the finish, great beer for it’s strength! Cletus (5001), Connecticut, USA Dec 28, 2008 Bottle courtesy of daknole. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Smells of vanilla, dark fruit, some sweet malt, a touch of spice. Tastes sweet and mildly peaty with a touch of spiciness. Some peppery splashes as the beer warms. Full Mouthfeel. Excellent. Strykzone (1458), Wood River, Illinois, USA Dec 28, 2008 This beer pours thin almost black with an active short lived tan head. The aroma is of a merlot with some whiskey. Feel is thin. Flavor is complex and interesting. There is wood, wine, coffee, earth, smoke, vanilla, and chocolate. Warmer temperature brought the smoke and chocolate out even more. Very tasty. nramsburg (200), New York, New York, USA Dec 27, 2008 Bottle. 50 cl.
Pours to a deep ruby brown with a small sized head. Smells a hell of a lot like butterscotch.
Medium body. Fairly creamy with a lot of butterscotch flavor up front. While other reviewers have picked up on fruits, Im certainly not getting these at all. This finishes with a yeasty sweetness.
Interesting, fairly simple beer, but nothing if not a shining example of the style. thefederalist (226), Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA Dec 27, 2008 Bottle. Unlike the discription, this is not "the colour of a glorious ruby red wine". It is the colour of a glorious black porter, and I honestly cant say why it is listed as an old ale. I dont get any molasses, or anything you would consider typical. Just chocolate and British ale yeast. Very little hops in the nose, and it swims over the tongue like something from Samuel Smiths. s All in all a good beer. It may lack complexity, but it is practically flawless.
