"The nose on this beer is ripe and fruity with slightly vinous esters, married to interesting hop notes - the colour of a glorious red ruby wine."

Tasted from tall brown bottle into nonic pint glass. Great artwork and design. It poured a dark reddish brown colour with thick, creamy, long-lasting beige foam, spritzy little bubbles and lots of fine lace. Beautiful appearance. Aromas of bread, toast, black plums and cherries, faint flowery and resiny hops. Flavors of malt, brown bread, caramel, toffee, dark stone fruits again, coffee and cream, dark chocolate, tangy hops balance, pleasant tartness, almost a faint sourness. Full-bodied, average carbonation, chewy mouthfeel, lingering, complex, bittersweet aftertaste. An exquisitely delicious beer in every way. Oh, how I long to taste a cask-conditioned version of this baby!

Aroma: Light, dark fruit, light oxidation, roasty, vinous, Appearance: Body: Very dark brown with red hues. Head: Large, tan, fine bubbles, good retention. Flavour: Light nutty, roasty, vinous. light oxidation. Medium-light bitterness, light sweetness. Dry finish. Mouthfeel: Medium body. Medium-light carbonation. Overall: Slightly too much oxidation. May have been caused by the flight. Low malt flavour. Body is too light. Drinkable, but not to style. 500 ml bottle, poured. Thanks Bev! 19A. Old Ale

Dark brown, quickly fading off-white head, leaving it looking like cola. Interesting things in the aroma - figs, dates, light malt - and some sourness in the flavour, with caramel, a hint of chocolate and dried fruit. Looks like it will have a heavier body than it has, but it’s drinkable and tasty.

Pours deep drown with hints of amber-brown around the margins, two fingers of light beige head diminishing rapidly to a thin cap, minimal lacing. (4/5) Nose is muted, toasted malts, coffee, earthy hops, molasses, smoked peat, sour red berries. (7/10) Taste is mild sweet and bitter, moderate sour/tart. (7/10) Light to medium body, somewhat thin and watery, moderate sustained carbonation, lingering tart bitter finish. (3/5) Still not a fan of Scotch Ales, overall. This looks like it should be a porter or stout, which it emphatically is not, but that’s more of an aside than a major issue. There’s just a hint of smoke and peat here, but even that feels slightly out of place against the surprisingly light body and vinous, sour flavours. It’s quite drinkable, but I wouldn’t go looking for another. (15/20)

Pours darker than a typical porter, but slightly more transparent than a stout. Above average head volume, lacing and retention. Vey rich complex nose of sweet caramel, hints of dark fruit (plums), pear (as it warms), toffee with light coffee notes and a hint of roast and chocolate. Very light medium body with just a touch of smoothness. Average carbonation with a bit of effervescence on the finish. The flavor profile is well below average in intensity, complex and well balanced. It begins rather bland, but comes alive in the middle. Dark fruits become evident along with the other flavors of the nose except for the caramel - it is totally absent. The long finish has a hop note. Perhaps this bottle is old, but since they don’t bottle date...

50 cl bottle from Liviko Alcostore in Tallinn harbour (€ 3,10). Pours a very dark brown with little red glare against light. Head is creamy tan and thick while lacing nicely. Nose is surprisingly faint with some roasty and nutty notes, a bit sourish (red currant juice?). Taste also roasty and nutty with notes of berries (again a hint of red currant, more as it warms) and slightly winey, and by winey I mean wine made of... yeah, red currants. Finish is malty crisp and roasty dry with nearly no bitterness. Body light to medium with medium prickly carbonation. Would be good I think with some fatty meat dish.

Clear red-tinged dark brown, creamy tan head. Mild malty nose with chocolate and roasty hints. Flavor is peaty-smokey notes with roasty malt, fruity hints, lingering chocolate. A nice balance, easy to drink, but a bit thin for me.
