Minimal aroma, some malts and a hint of chocolate. Dark garnet red pour with a thinnish beige head. Thin mouthfeel, malts, chocolate, tobacco. Nice flavors, good overall beer. I think it is true to style.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark brown body with an average, frothy, tan head, mostly diminishing with some lacing though.
Moderate malty aroma (roasted) with complex notes of red fruits (cherry), chocolate, coffee, maybe light raisins.
Moderate-to-heavy sweet flavour, balanced with a moderate bitter character; bitterness becomes more evident in the finish.
Medium body with oily texture; soft carbonation.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle 50 cl, BBE 04/2015. Pours black in color with a frothy tan head. The initial notes were some smokyness which turned into some sweetish licorice, burnt coffee beans and light herbal notes in aroma. There are also some dark fruityness present here, for instance a bit like not that ripe plums. Slightly burnt coffee and herbal notes in taste. A bit light perhaps, but still this is quite nicely packed with both aroma and flavor considering the low abv. Soft and smooth mouthfeel nonetheless. Later on there appears some smokyness and hints of saltyness in aftertaste.

500ml bottle. Pours clear dark brown with a frothy to creamy head that thins slowly leaving good lace. Nose of caramel and bread dough. Very light bitter taste, watery body, thin texture, lively carbonation and a very brief finish. No date on the bottle. Freshness??

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a dark ruby red, almost black, with a thick, creamy tan head. Aroma is a little fruity but mostly malt and alcohol. Taste has a hint of coffee with a smooth finish, almost sweet on the back end. Leaves a slick finish on the palate. Not at all what I expected, but still darn good.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500 ml bottle into pint glass, bottled on 6/6/2011. Pours lightly cloudy nearly opaque dark brown color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, toffee, molasses, toast, raisin, plum, pear, apple, dark bread, light roast, herbal, light pepper, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark malt and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, dark bread, toast, molasses, raisin, plum, pear, light roast, herbal, light pepper, light leather, and toast/yeast earthiness. No bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, dark bread, toast, molasses, raisin, plum, pear, light roast, herbal, and toast/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied; with a fairly creamy, smooth, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 4.6%. Overall this is a damn nice Scottish ale! All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Appearance- very dark with a ruby tint. Small, bubbly beige head. Aroma- lots of chocolatey malt, sweetness, maltiness. Taste- bitter chocolate, cocoa, burnt notes, some plum and raisin, quite a short finish with hints of coffee. Very drinkable, and full-flavoured for the abv. Impressive.
