hughie (3996) - Bedford, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND - MAR 30, 2008
Cask at Pilgrims Progress (JDW), Bedford, in the Wetherspoons Real Ale Festival. Very dark brown with a small off white head. Strong liquorice and ash aroma, developing buttery notes. A promising start. Taste was rather more restrained: a bit of fag ash, some warm, oily malt, a little sweetness and a touch of bitterness to follow. Pretty good.

On gravity at the Bristol Beer Festival 14/3/08. Opaque, near black in colour with a slight tan head. Aromas of licorice, black fruit, and treacle. Full mouth feel with sweet flavour of preserved fruit and chocolate, and a roasted malt bitter finish. Excellent.

UPDATED: OCT 26, 2011 Cask ... Deep solid black ... Solid head ... Nice roast malt nose ... Smooth sweet chocolate ... no real bitternesss ... lots of sweet roast malts ... some hop in linger ... Good balance... I checked(twice) that this wasnt a rebadge of Dark Island, and was assured it wasnt.

Cask @ York Beer Festival, november 07. Opaque, ruby, very dark brownish color with some ruby hues. Deep, roasty, coffee flavor with some molasses notes. Rich caramel flavor with some toasty, torrified flavors. Very complex. Some earthy/ musty notes at the end. Medium to full mf, complex, full of flavors with excellent layered flavors. Top notch old ale.

August 2005, I have tasted this from bottle, but this rating is from cask in Ferry Inn, Uig, Isle of Skye on a warm day with view over the entire bay. Nice head. The aroma has nice coffee notes sand the flavour has a lot of coffee, licorice and a bit of citrus just before the finish, that is slightly bitter with a touch of caramel.

Cask (Gallows Bird, Espoo, Real Ale Festival 2004) Rich reddy brown, thin head. Early taste quite burnt, but softens into a grainy body - malty and a little ’brown’. Soft and strong - good combination. Very well balanced beer. Mid-way between Old Ale and old-style Porter.
