3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask at Pilgrims Progress (JDW), Bedford, in the Wetherspoons Real Ale Festival. Very dark brown with a small off white head. Strong liquorice and ash aroma, developing buttery notes. A promising start. Taste was rather more restrained: a bit of fag ash, some warm, oily malt, a little sweetness and a touch of bitterness to follow. Pretty good.

August 2005, I have tasted this from bottle, but this rating is from cask in Ferry Inn, Uig, Isle of Skye on a warm day with view over the entire bay. Nice head. The aroma has nice coffee notes sand the flavour has a lot of coffee, licorice and a bit of citrus just before the finish, that is slightly bitter with a touch of caramel.

Cask (Gallows Bird, Espoo, Real Ale Festival 2004)
Rich reddy brown, thin head. Early taste quite burnt, but softens into a grainy body - malty and a little ’brown’. Soft and strong - good combination. Very well balanced beer. Mid-way between Old Ale and old-style Porter.
