Black, thin off white head; roast malt predominates alongside dark fruit, perhaps black cherries and raisins; coffee lurks in the background; thick, smooth mouthfeel; some hop bitterness and a slight fruity tang to the finish; a respectable well-rounded drink.

Cask at The Queens Arm, Edinburgh. Opaque dark brown, possibly black. Creamy beige head, diminishing but keeps 1/2 a finger of frothy layer. Nose is roasted malts, licorice, hints of flowers. Soft light sweet bready malt-flavor with chicory, licorice and chocolate notes and a medium bitter finish. Light body, flat carbonation. Decent.

I canít believe Iíve not reviewed a beer from The Orkney Brewery before, must have drank too many and forgot to write about them! This review will right that wrong.
Hand pulled pint into a UK sleeve in The Baron of Beef, Cambridge during Nov 2011.
Dark, dark brown body with an off-white head of smooth foam. The head stayed and gave some good lacing.
The smells where of rich malty molasses with coffee/toffee, all roasted over an open fire.
The taste was of a chocolate laden fruit and nut cake baked a little too long, taken with a bitter coffee. Add some alcohol and youíre almost there, I liked it!
Heavy mouthfeel, but in great condition, with a lovely soft carbonisation, only really found in well kept darker cask ales.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
First tasted this in Coanes, Johnstone in May 1991. Cask, handpump dispense. Ruby black in colour with a thick white creamy head. Strong latte coffee in the distinctive aroma. Thick creamy mouthfeel and good lacing throughout. Dark malts give a rich, moist maltloaf base with strong signature flavours of mocha coffee, plain chocolate, treacle toffee fudge and a slight hint of sour berry fruit. Quick note of bitter hop resins present in the earthy aftertaste. Strong malty finish with sweet molasses, dry oak cask notes laced with vanilla and liquorice. One of the best Scottish session Old Ale type that is out there at present. Always consistantly on form and very, very popular throughout Scotland. Ticks all the boxes for me - superb stuff!

Cask at Archibald Simpson, Aberdeen. It pours very dark ruby, with a thick tan head. The nose is roasted malt, smoke and charcoal. The taste dark fruit (raisin and plum), strawberry, cherry, roasted malt, charcoal, hint of chocolate powder and vinous element, with a dry-roasted finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Really good balance and high drinkability.

Cask at Ryans Bar. A good looking dark beer with a tan head. Roast and coffee aroma. Flavour is coffee, more roast with a clean dry finish. A good beer.
