From cask at The Ferry Inn, Stromness. Black. Pale brown very dense and persistent head. Good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and dark toffe. Similar taste. Round mothfeel. Balanced by moderate bitterness in aftertaste. High drinkability and served in perfect condition.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: MAY 1, 2014 Cask, The Old Inn, Gairloch. Maybe I wasn’t in the mood for this dark ale, stout.
There was nothing offensive about it, but nothing hoppy or wholesome or distinctive.it reminded me of a kit homebrewed stout I brewed a couple of years ago. I was very pleased with it, but then, It cost me 30p a bottle and was out of a tin.
I think I’m not a dark ale fan, that’s the problem.

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Arômes de malts, café, graines torréfiées. On distingue même une pointe de caramel. Plutôt décevante, corpulence trop faible.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask at the Southwark Tavern. Black with a small tan head, which doesn’t endure long. Smell is quite potent - roasted barley and smoke. Body is medium to light, carbonation is low, pretty smooth and not foamy. Taste is initially caramel coffee, moving to toffee, roasted barley, vegetable water and stewed banana, lightly bitter resin finish. This initially struck me as a very good beer but the overall impression from a pint is that the flavour is a little weak and the finish becomes a bit off-putting. Decent though.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cask. Inky black, just-visible red tinge when held up to bright light. Close cropped, lasting mid-brown head. Dark chocolate, roasted nuts, toast. Very balanced, round malty flavour. Thick and full, lasting but not properly bitter. Plays like a mild more than an old, but excellent nonetheless.

Hmm this just isn’t my thing. And I had it warm. Aroma and taste both of licorice and star anise. Sour, bitterness not too bad. But really not great

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask in the Prince Albert W11. Deep black in colour on first glance, ruddy highlights. Deep dark malty but not roasty, sweetish and treacly, a hint of smoke, well balanced with enough hop bitterness to keep it drinkable. Very tasty for the abv.
