Vinous dark fruits in the nose along withalty sweetness. Dark brown body topped by a tight off white head that recedes to cover. Lightly sour fruit flavour is complemented by sweet and roasty malts. Medium body with low carbonation. Delicious and easy to drink. Enjoyed on cask at the Halfway House in Edinburgh in September 2012.

Cask at Guildford Arms. Pours brown-black with a good tan head, great lacing. Aromas of milk chocolate, burnt toast, roasted malt. Taste brings toffee, and a slight sour note. Good, but more of a stout than anything.

Pint at the Back of Beyond in Reading. Black with a good bubbly head. Lovely rich roast aroma. Chocolate malt, rich light roast, a good blend. Pretty nice, quite subtle. Just slightly lacking body. Tastes nice, but not as good as it smells. To be fair it was possibly served a little too cold.

Really lovely dark beer fully of malt, chocolate, sweetness. Very smooth and great condition. Could have used a bit more strength and flavour though.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
Very dark brown ale. Smoky aroma - almost that of a Rauschbier. Lighter taste than you would expect, very much in keeping with a mild. instead of an old ale. Liquorice predominates. Only letdown is in the palette, which throws a too-bitter curveball into an otherwise balanced mix.

Tap@ Ben Loyal in Tongue. Zwarte kleur en geen kraag. Ruikt zuur, azijn, wijn. Smaakt ook zurig, vaag hout. Waterig. Als ik de andere recenties hier lees vraag ik me af of ik hetzelfde bier heb gehad..... Het stond toch echt op de tap. Ik vond het bier niet lekker.

Cask at the Clydesdale in Lanark (JDW). Not quite as good as the bottled version which I have drank many times before. Surprising but will look out for this again on cask for a definitive answer.
