Aroma of fresh bread and/or chocolate cake. Flavor is dominated by malts: chocolate, some coffee, and fruit. Palate is smooth and creamy, just a touch dry, but not overly. Overall a very good beer..highly drinkable. carruthm (1187), Seattle, Washington, USA

A - mix of hops and dark malts, spices, fruits. oats a bit, but the dark fruit spices really come through with some brown sugar notes.
T - dark fruits and spice. reminds me of a marzen.
P - wonderfully smooth. Didn’t know this was considered a barleywine, but it fits perfectly with the more higher rated BWs. azlondon (671), Fribourg, Switzerland

Decent lacing and retention. Rich malty aroma with brown sugar and dark fruit notes. Very malty taste. Dark fruits and an interesting sourness in the finish. The aroma is thick, sweet and slightly fruity, with hints of dark fruit and molasses. The color was outstanding, a deep, rich dark mahogany. A fantastic beer, over all. bryandhargrave (165), Richmond, Virginia, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 23, 2008 Pours a beef brothy amber brown. Aroma is beefy too! Warms to a molasses, brown sugar, caramel, beef and barley soup. Taste is a bit dry and salty then sweet and warming. Slight bitterness is detectable but understated. This one’s a heavy meal akin to shepherds pie. Great to sip. solifugid (16), New Paltz, New York, USA
| 4.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Jun 20, 2008 Sweet, fruity, lasting head, dark-reddish amber color, notes of fig and dark fruit. Doesn’t taste as boozy as I’d expect an 8.5% beer to taste. My favorite beer, by far.
