3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Thanks for sharing, Harold. This one was not what was expected. Aroma was almost buttery, like a red wine, with some light fruit, alcohol, and bread. Flavors were pretty similar with a distinct buttery/fruitiness and a pronounced alcohol flavor. Not bad.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Mitchell’s Wines, Sheffield. Clear, reddy copper colour. Film and halo of lasting, white head. Fruity, toffee malts. Quite vinous. Some prune and prune juice. Has that stone fruit earthiness. Taste has a light sweetness running through a mostly tart, fruity dry, slightly boozy feel. Palate is a bit thin. Finishes vine fruit tart, and dry.

1.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 4/20
Wanted to try this one simply because it’s a beer from the Orkney Islands. I expected a nice tasting ale but I actually found it quite bad. The taste of alcohol is too strong and the beer itself is sweet in a bad way.

Medium aroma with sweet malts, berries and syrup. Dark copper color with light natural white head. Semi-hazy liquid. Medium taste with sweet malts and hint of dark berries and sour notes. Medium taste spectrum and short bit sweet malty aftertaste. Balanced. Medium body with light carbonation. Overall balanced but too light for this percentage.

Brilliant clear deep chestnut brown, small frothy beige head, recedes quickly, very light lacing; rich aroma, sweet roasted malts, dark fruits, brown sugar, light alcoholic; taste medium to heavy sweet, slightly bitter, roasted coffee, caramel syrup; full body, soft carbonation, sweetbitter aftertaste, roasted malts till the end, spicy notes, warming alcohol; pleasant beer though all in all a somewhat one-dimensional.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Brown bottle, 330ml, cask and barrel. Pours dark ruby with a thin grey head subsiding at an average pace. Scent is ultra sweet and a bit malty, but clean. Sugar. Taste is honey and a tiny bit ethanol, reminds me of a liqueur. Mouth feels dense and syrup-like. Good.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured from bottle into a snifter
Appearance – The beer pours a deep mahogany-brownish color with a one finger head of cream colored foam. The head has a fantastic level of retention, with it slowly fading over time to leave a fantastic level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite potent of a darker fruit smell of raisin, cherry and fig. Along with these aromas comes some notes of an almost woody smell as well as lots of caramel and molasses. A little hint of a grainy and grassy smell round it all out, creating a rather nice aroma overall.
Taste – The taste begins with a good deal of sweeter flavors, being a blend of caramel, molasses, cherry and raisin. Right from the start there is a decent showing of a bready malt flavor, which gains more and more roastiness as the taste advances. All the while the sweeter flavors dwindle a little bit drying out the flavor ever so slightly (although by no means creating a dry taste). Toward the end some graininess, wood, and earthy hop come to the tongue and with a decent hit of a boozy alcohol flavor, one is left with a rather warming but smooth flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is a little on the thinner side for a 8.5 % brew with a carbonation that is a little on the higher side. While I would traditionally like a bit more thickness and less carbonation, the combo actually sorta works for the flavors, and makes this one an easier sipper in light of its boozy flavors.
Overall – This was a quite tasty scotch ale. One I will certainly go to again in the future.
