Poured out a clear, deep ruby brew with ample very light tan head that took a while to die down leaving some decent messy lacing. Very forward aroma: thick and caramelly, raisins, lightly toasted rye bread, dates?, spices, medium roast and mid range sweetness. The taste is also pretty good: Solid malts, caramel, dark fruits, cherry, chocolate, nutty and faint smoke. Good stuff but nothing to sell your house over. Fairly smooth, medium bodied, coats the mouth and finishes long with a welcome bitterness.

Extremely inviting aroma of cookies, dough, papaya, apple, faint peat- a huge amount of character- rather special. The taste is definetely less interesting. Sweet and nutty. Residual sugars in the finish which is reminiscent of dried apricot, raisin and walnuts. ogreface (309), Budapest, Hungary

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 26, 2009 Bottle. Pour a deeper amber with an off white head. Malty sweet aroma with some over ripe fruit. The flavor has a fruity sweetness, toffee, and a lighter hint of earth. Pretty good. OleR (2049), Oslo, Norway
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 26, 2009 Bottle@Cardinal, Stavanger. A thick layer of beige bubbles upon a clear, deep amber colored body. Strong, grainy malt aroma with caramel and roasted nuts. A distinct fruit scent, too. Notes of alcohol. Taste is rich malty and rather sweet. Lots of ripe fruits, and a fair amount of bittering hops to balance. Some smoky and wooden notes. Alcohol is noticable, but not disturbing. Well-bodied and thick in the mouth. Long, fairly dry, malty and mild bitter finish. tmoreau (573), Lombard, Illinois, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 24, 2009 Poured to a fluted fest glass at Brixie’s Holiday Beer Tasting in Brookfield, IL. The color was a coppery brown, with a head of some off white, bubbly foam, and periods and commas of clingy lacing. The aroma and flavor were similar notes of toastiness, caramel, with some sweetness as malt and dried fruit. A nice Scotch Ale but mild and entry level as an English Barley Wine, imo. The commercial description also seemed a little over the top. WVHouseofBeer (373), Morgantown, West Virginia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 23, 2009 What a nose! The malt aroma from this brew is outstanding and really gives you a hint at what awaits your taste buds. A burnt auburn color and well-lacing creme head makes for an acceptable appearance. While the flavor is wholly Scottish with a malt heavy flavor and mouthfeel. While barley wine is the right style, a scottish ale could also apply. A very good offering from Orkney indeed. troopie (874), USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 23, 2009 Bottle. Poured deep red with thick white foamy head. Full aroma of caramel, fruit. Fruity taste, with some cloves and allspice. Spicy fruity finish with alcohol warmth, tastes strong, perhaps stronger than it is. Skeegle (488), Maryland, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 23, 2009 Very soft palate that has heavy malts but are soft and not full or filling. Definitely full of those heavy dark fruits most barley wines and BSAs come with, figs, plum skin, raisins, etc, but there’s also some lighter fruits too, I was getting pineapple when this was cold. A nice beer, and considering the ABV and origin, not too bad on the wallet.
