doppelmeup (51), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Jun 10, 2008 Poured a bottle into a Duvel tulip.
Very pretty, dark amber color. Not a lot of head, but it settled into a quarter inch layer that lasted through the glass. So far so good.
The smell was quite complex. Malty, sweet, some spice and some faint smokiness. Very nice.
Great flavor. Malt then nutty, then some bitterness to balance the sweetness, hints of smoke. As the beer warmed, more alcohol came through.
The beer left the mouth slightly dry.Very light carbonation.

Served at cellar temperature in Duvel glass. Intriguing aroma of roasted malts, dark cherries, peat smoke, grass and whiskey oak. Body is dark brown thick with yeasty sediment with a creamy off-white head and lacing. Mouth is rich, almost velvet smooth, yet only the slightest incling of hops and tiny bit of alcohol warmth. Flavour reminds me of Drambuie; whiskey, peat smoke, honey, grassy hops, toffee, wood. Finishes dry with a bit of bitter hop emergence. Rich and uniquely flavour brew. Deceptively drinkable for 8.5%!!! rustychiles (475), Mesa, Arizona, USA Oct 1, 2008 Pours a nice reddish brown with a small off white head. Aroma of dark fruits, malt, rasins, caramel, molasses. Flavor is sweet dark fruits, earthy undertones, brown sugar, caramel, molasses, thick syrupy mouthfeel. Good stuff. DrDavid (351), Johnson, Vermont, USA Sep 7, 2008 (Bottle). Fruity sweet aroma. Reddish dark amber, with small off-white head. Flavor is sweetish pineapple and other fruit, with the alcohol apparent. Interesting, but not outstanding. tturner (8), , Washington, USA does not count Sep 6, 2008 a solid barley wine. somewhat uninteresting. improved in enjoyability as the pint progressed. slight sweet but somewhat flattish flavor response from beginning to end. quite drinkable and overall a fine beer. sbroome (8), Burnsville, Minnesota, USA does not count Sep 6, 2008 This is definately a Scotch Ale from the excellent Scottish island of Orkney. An amber-colored ale with medium head, bordering on a reddish ale. Nose is that of fruit and carmel. Taste is sweet and quite bold. Molasses and sugary, a clearness of peat and smoke, good muscle behind this, but not enough to punch you in the gut. Can clearly notice the high alcohol.
