Orange. Intense nose of yeast, herb, spices. Bitter, dry. Incredible drinkability. Slightly acid, pleasant and refreshing. A masterpiece.

Good. The nose is a little barny with notes of fruit and light floral hops. The beer is a unique copper orange with a lasting white head. The taste is fruity with biscuitike malts and floral hops and some underlying barnyard notes. The beer is very dry and crisp.

Born on 8/18/11. Cannot believe I have not rated this-I bought 1/2 case at the brewery back in ’98 for $13 (plus glass!!) and haven’t looked back. Pours with a big fluffy head and dark copper hazy. Nose is full of brett yeast with a nice spunkiness. Taste of a bit of honey, a little spiciness, with a bitter sharpness and above-average carbonation to keep your mind on things. Just an absolutely enjoyable beer.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 ThirstyBird (87) - Dusseldorf, GERMANY - MAY 18, 2012
2009 bottle. Pours a bright amber with tan head that falls to blanket. Smell is interesting and complex, cherry, sour notes, yeast. Taste is slight sour, tart fruit, some band aid sneaking in there. This 3 year old bottle isn’t as good as some of the 1/2 year old bottles.....hmmm

11.2? oz. bottle from a tulip. Pours a nice hazy color. Aroma has a ton of sweet notes and great Belgian yeast. Taste has a surprisingly hoppy presence for a flagship Trappist ale. Great yeast character, sweet malt profile, and very dry finish. Great beer.

Did this as a bit of an experiment - aged for 5 years.
Poured in to a Duvel tulip glass, poured a dark orange - a little sediment crept in. Head was thick but dissipated fairly quickly - good carbonation.
Aroma is very sour, hits you as soon as you open the bottle.
Tastes sour yet earthy, alcohol a little more prominent than a younger version. Sweetness of the malt has mellowed but still quite dry.
Very interesting stuff.

Very complex beer. Serious aroma of mezcal. Flavor is remnant of nicely aged tequila and orange pez.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 umich03jm (154) - Michigan, USA - MAY 3, 2012
Cloudy dark orange pour with a nice head that lingers a while. Fruity aroma, citrus, berries, and raisins. Taste is fairly sweet, fruity, yeasty, very dry and very carbonated. It has an acidic finish that I’m not a fan of. An interesting beer, almost like champagne in a way. A good belgian ale but not my favorite.
2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 BlackHaddock (1674) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - MAY 2, 2012
Oct 2006 (and I still have those two for later!): I have two more in my garage, so this review may change after a further tasting, but I was not impressed at all with this bottle. The worst beer a monk has ever made for me!
Slightly cloudy, an off orange colour.
Smell was of sour apples, no head, just a wisp, which went almost straight away.
Tasted of the same sour apples as the smell, sharp and fizzy.
If it had been a blind tasting, I would have said it was a rough Cider or a really poor Geuze.
