MrRoss (614), Delta, British Columbia, Canada Jul 8, 2009 Is this the greatest beer I’ve ever had? Might be. The action started from the moment I popped the cap, as it started boiling over. The waste! The horror! Into the glass (sadly, not a proper glass), it produced a towering fluffy white head, that after five minutes, mostly remained, nicely topping off a rich and cloudy orange body. The aroma was quite something, with a multitude of spices. Taste was of course supurb, with not too much of anything. Mouthfeel and finish ruled as well. marchcow (664), Coralville, Iowa, USA Jul 7, 2009 Beautiful spicy bright and malty aroma. Some cinnamon and Christmas bread and figs. Slightly off white head with a rosy orange tint. Head remains nice and thick. Flavor is immediately dry. Some pickled qualities. Bitter hoppiness with some wax, honey, and sour apple qualities. Bitterness is dominant. Palate is mild and dry on the finish. Continuing with bitterness on the palate for a long duration. Good overall. evergreen0199 (259), London, Greater London, England Jul 7, 2009 Bottle. Hazy orange pour with a decent white head. Fruity aroma. Quite bitter, orangey, slightly sour taste. This is actually my least favourite Belgian trappist ale. Really love the Orval glass but never really got hooked on the beer itself. Nik925 (300), California, USA Jul 6, 2009 6.9% bottle. Aroma and appearance are perfect. Amazing head that lingers forever. Taste falls short though, with harsh bitterness and dry single note malt flavors. Far more hops than I expect out of a Belgian Ale. I wish that the flavor (esp from the yeast) matched the aroma.
Great carb! DuffManSW (283), Riverside, California, USA Jul 3, 2009 Bottle from BevMo.. Pours cloudy orange with a fluffy white head..Smell is very tart and sour which I really like.. Then you taste it..WTF!! Nothing like the smell.. Flavor is very dry with alot of carbonation that makes it kinda hard to drink...MEH!! PolishHammer (64), , Connecticut, USA Jul 3, 2009 A dark reddish beer with a decent sized off-white head. Smell and flavor of licorice. More acidic and spicey than most of the trappist style beers, so not my favorite because of that. Still, a classic, and very enjoyable. More hop character than I’m used to in a trappist too. randolphjj (89), Raymore, Missouri, USA Jul 3, 2009 Carbonation is pretty hefty on this bottle. It exploded when the cap was pried off. But the heavenly belgian yeast aroma that came out of it was a nice way the bottle made up to me.
I’m honestly happier with the nose than the taste. On the back end that "extra dry taste" is a bit off-putting to me. Just my palate. jrallen34 (123), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 2, 2009 I drank this from a bottle at the Abbey in Orval.
This beer is very different from the other Trappists. Its lighter in color and almost fruity. TThe aroma is fruity, very distinct flavor of oranges and spice. The color is a deep orange that pours with a white head that sticks around.
The great color and aroma are let down by its taste. It is very acidic and bland, it is the by the far the least of the Trappistes.
