3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 phillybeer7779 (101) - USA - SEP 10, 2011
Golden in color, nice head. Lemon with a nint of funk in the flavor. Very light on the palate, dances on the tongue.
4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 bsp77 (724) - Minnesota, USA - SEP 5, 2011
Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Tulip.
Appearance: Cloudy but bright orange with an enormous billowing off-white head that does not go away and clings to everything.
Aroma: Musty fruit, banana and clove. Hard to describe but dry, musty and tart overall - actually this seems to be the horse blanket smell I have heard described before.
Taste: Very earthy malts with lots of clove and general Belgian funk. A little fruit is present as well. Turns ever-so-slightly bitter and peppery at the end of each sip.
Palate: Very high carbonation, light-medium body, very dry finish.
Overall: This and Duvel are by far the best Belgian Ales that fall on the paler side of the spectrum. Orval is a true original - refreshing and complex.

This is one of my favorite trappist beers. While it has such less alcohol in it (which I like) it’s so complex. First off, I don’t like this beer cold, give me the cellar temperature which doesn’t kill the taste as a fridge does. Orval has a huge difference when it’s older. Even after 1 year it is much better. If you can get your hands on an older one (6m-1year), please do so. Amabassadors from Orval need to provide you with cellar ones and older ones, so just pay those 2€ extra or so, it’s definitely worth it!
As for the taste, it’s a bitter one, but a very complex bitter one. While bitter IPA style beers are amongs my favourites, this is certainly just another bitter one!
I also tried one from 1989 which wasn’t good anymore, i guess 1-5 years is best for this superb beer.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BillWyce (296) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 2, 2011
From notes: bottle poured into Chimay glass. Poured a bubbly orange-amber with a thick, off-white head. Complex nose- some orangey citrus, biscuity yeast, and a slight spice note as well, possibly a note of honey. Medium-bodied, but deep, with a slight thickness. Orangey citrus taste that has some biscuity yeast show in the finish. As it warmed, the yeast became stronger and a mild spice note, maybe clove, developed.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 Vignale (781) - Malmö, SWEDEN - AUG 30, 2011
4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 biggirlpanties (47) - Maryland, USA - AUG 27, 2011
Pour is a hazy caramel with a rocky sightly off white head. Aroma is fresh flowers with a hint of lemon. Clean laundry, if you can believe that. Taste is a little bit of vanilla, very light and fresh with a champagne body. Dry finish with a hint of lemon on the finish as well. Really refreshing. Now this is the champagne of beers.

It is about time I had this very popular Belgian! Light floral aroma. Dark gold pour. Dry, astringent, fruity, yeasty. The flavor is not that rich for a Trappist ale. The aftertaste was irritatingly bitter. Maybe the bottle was past its prime, or my palate was acting up a little, but I was not that impressed with this stuff. I will give it another try someday.
