deyholla (506), Bloomington, Indiana, USA May 19, 2009 Pour a dark cloudy amber with a off white head. Aroma is fruity with a bit of malt undertone. Flavor is sweet with a bit of alcohol and a nice finish. Not the best of the Trappists, but still enjoyable MrPickles (108), Wisconsin, USA May 16, 2009 Aroma is rich and mainly fruity, almost more like a cider or brandy than a beer, except there is a little maltiness. Color is a hazy honey golden with a very thick and persistent head. Flavor is malty and has a strong apple overtone, plus some bitterness that doesn’t seem like hoppy bitterness and is a bit unpleasant. Texture is smooth and just a little on the thin side. Overall, not my thing. MrBeerFanatic (344), jamestown, New York, USA May 14, 2009 Pours a murky dark amber with a notably thick sudsy/ frothy/ fizzy off white head that never seems to go away. Several aromas of cherry, fig, bread, touch of spice, nut, and hop. The complex flavors are a little overrun from a slight alcoholic taste, but once you get past that you have an assortment of flavors. There is a little cherry, bread, and then mostly dry hops. Very dry with a touch of sweet and bitter then goes sour. A good trappist in my book. odgaard (248), Skyum, Thisted, Denmark May 14, 2009 Hazy orange with a lasting beige head. Aroma: Malt, fruit (apple?), yeast, spice (coriander). Taste: Very dry, hops, spice, fruit. Orval was my first experience with other beers than main stream beers. That was an exceptional experience. Therefore Orval will allways be special to me. puggy211 (576), cordova, Tennessee, USA May 13, 2009 Aroma is pleasent Mallty with hints of flowers herbs and fruits specifically Apple and a light banana. Pours an opaque orange gold with a fluffy big white head. nice lacing. The flavor starts with apple with some light sourness and notes of yeast moves into a dry flowery light hoppiness and ends sour with a lasting after taste. A delightfull dry smooth mouth feel.Very good!
noncaloric (601), Madison, Wisconsin, USA May 9, 2009 Bottled 09/07/2008. Murky, ruddy peach-colored pour. An extrememly exuberant open, off-white head is difficult to contain, never fully dissipates, light gobs of lace on the glass, free-standing piles of foam on the beer. Aroma is built around the creamy brett funk, bits of citric and generally seltzery tartness around the edges. Flavor is also yeast driven, the bretty backbone sits on the tongue forever while lemon zest, hints of cinnamon, general floral notes, hops bitterness, float past. Musty finish, fruity bits in the linger, strawberry, bitter melon. Medium body, dry, refreshing palate. Steely (149), , Sweden May 7, 2009 Celebrating rating no 100 with a majestic Orval bottled oct 28 2008. Pours thick hazy amber color with a great foamy off white head. Fantastic floral aroma of violets and lavender. Lots of fruit, banana, melon and pear. Perfectly balanced with refreshing delicate, complex flavor. Wonderful fruity sweetness in the beginning from apricot and figs.Finishing off with a cascade of orange and grapefruit in perfect harmony.
Dry crisp and fresh with an absolute perfect full chewy mothfeel. True monk magic. mkel07 (494), Brisbane, Australia May 6, 2009 330ml bottle. Poured a deep orange colour and was clear with good carbonation and a large foamy head on tiny compacted bubbles. Aroma of bubblegum, citrus and banana. Feels great in the mouth and leaves a long moreish aftertaste. Fair amount of bitterness but also a touch of sweetness. Good drop.
